I don’t need to remind you, but things I make rarely turn out as pretty as I plan them in my head. These cookies were meant to look so stylish but I chose fun with my toddler over beautiful photos and I think you should too. Because Christmas to me is all about time with family and these cookies are a lovely way to spend an afternoon together. Make a babyccino or hot chocolate at the end, put Elf on the telly and consume as much sugar as Buddy. Because that’s what Christmas is all about too. Right?
Decorated Sugar Cookies
I followed this recipe for sugar cookies. It appealed to me because it said that you don’t need to chill the biscuits after you’ve rolled them out. I am incredibly inpatient so this seemed like a winning plan – but in the end they ended up being stuck in the fridge for 30 minutes while we cleaned up.
1 cup of butter
1 cup of sugar
1 cup of self raising flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract. (Follow the link above for a more detailed recipe – this is not my area of expertise!)
I used my trusty babyccino and we chose a star and a Christmas tree. It only occurred to me as I sorted them that they are colour coded – all the Christmas cutters are green. Amazing! Even more amazing that it’s taken 6 months for me to notice.
The dough was quite sticky so we dusted down with flour before rolling it out. I kept it about 1cm thick to help stop it from breaking. However, as my toddler was ‘helping’ some were much thinner and some were much thicker. Oh well, icing covers a multitude of sins.
We cleaned down while they cooled and came up with a plan for the left over dough (all the off – cuts that became too sticky to re-roll). While they baked in the oven for 8-10 minutes at 180c, we made little balls from the left over mixture. We put them in mini cases and in a muffin tray for some extra support. Some of the balls got stuffed with Nutella (I chilled small amounts in the freezer for 5 minutes). The balls took 10-12 minutes in the oven – even though they were smaller, their shape meant they took longer to cook.

- A dash of milk or water or lemon juice
If you can’t cope with things getting messy, you can stop here or wait for the young ones to go to bed before decorating. I embrace mess, so once the cookies were cool we got down to the business of ‘prettying up’ the biscuits. I mixed up simple icing – icing sugar with a splash of milk and colouring. I should have made it a bit thicker. You live and learn. I plated up some decorations (I have learned not to put the whole tub out …). I found freeze dried raspberries at Sainsbury”s – they taste and look amazing!
These look questionable but taste AMAZING! I am not baker at all but these were easy to make. I thoroughly recommend the little balls, especially stuffed with chocolate. Dip them in white chocolate and freeze dried raspberries and they will be heavenly. The perfect Christmas fun size treat.
