Dubois backs Chisora to upset the odds against Usyk

‘I’m going for Del Boy to shock everyone’: Hot prospect Daniel Dubois backs Derek Chisora to upset the odds against Oleksandr Usyk and turn the heavyweight world upside down

  • Chisora weighed in at 18st 3lb, while former cruiserweight Usyk was 15st 7lb
  • Underdog was covered in paint and had the word ‘WAR’ on his chest at weigh in
  • A massive upset would remove Usyk from a complicated heavyweight equation

The betting odds on Derek Chisora beating Oleksandr Usyk in the Covid-19 bubble on Saturday veer crazily between 7-1 and what looks like a publicity stunt at 80-1.

The range favouring the Ukrainian swing almost as wildly, from 1-5 to 1-33.

The bookmakers are all over the place with this one. But one place none of them go is to predict victory for Britain’s gallant old warhorse at Wembley Arena.

Derek Chisora had bizarrely shown up for his weigh-in ahead of his clash Oleksandr Usyk in white paint and ‘WAR’ written across his chest

Chisora covered himself in paint, had the word ‘WAR’ daubed on his chest and unleashed a foul-mouthed tirade at Usyk at Friday’s weigh-in. The underdog covered his top half in white body paint and put his own spin on the Joker’s smile with his mouth and eyes painted black.

Usyk stared blankly at his opponent as Chisora, who wore a gumshield and a woolly hat, taunted him with threats and obscenities before security stepped in.

Chisora weighed in at 18st 3lb while former cruiserweight king Usyk was 15st 7lb.

The Brit faces his Ukranian counterpart on Saturday in a highly-anticipated showdown

A few friends and patriots are rallying behind Chisora and in heavyweight prize-fighting one hefty blow can turn the world on its head.

Daniel Dubois, the young Londoner in waiting for the world championship throne, said: ‘I’m going for Del Boy to shock everyone and pull this out of the bag.’

The biggest win of Chisora’s up and down career would remove Usyk from a complicated heavyweight equation, hopefully enabling Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury to collide for the undisputed world title sooner rather than later.

Usyk is demanding that the WBO enforce his mandatory challenge to Joshua once this winter’s flurry of heavyweight action is over.

Usyk is far and away the most technically gifted heavyweight on the planet. Master classes in those skills gave him undisputed domination at cruiserweight and the only question left to be answered is whether he can withstand a real battering in the top division.

That is what Chisora, 36, is threatening to dish out and he should provide a genuine test now he has elevated his training regime into what his mentor David Haye calls ‘another stratosphere’.

Chisora – who also wore a gumshield and black woolly hat – weighed in at 18st 3lb

Usyk, meanwhile, came in at 15st 7lbs, but insisted he was not scared off despite coming in nearly three stone lighter

Haye is one of few cruisers to have become world heavyweight champion. That experience encourages him to say: ‘Derek can move himself into position for a title shot if he puts Usyk under relentless pressure.’ But the Hayemaker admits that his ageing protege ‘will definitely lose’ if Usyk fulfils this promise: ‘I will make this a night of pure boxing. Peace not war.’

Chisora is hoping the referee will not prevent him going about his clubbing business on the inside and is warning his opponent: ‘I can’t box but I can fight and I can hit.’

He will mount a heroic charge but I expect Usyk to tame him. Either by late stoppage or a wide points margin.

Security however were forced to step in as Chisora launched a foul-mouthed tirade on Usyk

The winner of Saturday’s bout will get a mandatory shot at WBO champion Anthony Joshua
