Israel Adesanya insists he will not bulk up in a similar fashion to Jon Jones as he gets set to move up in weight ahead of his fight against Jan Blachowicz.
‘The Last Stylebender’ confirmed this week that he is making the step up to light-heavyweight, with Adesanya’s coach Eugene Bareman recently revealed they were targeting the Nigerian-born New Zealander becoming a two-weight champion.
Blachowicz claimed the light-heavyweight belt vacated by Jones in September but as Jones himself prepares to step up to heavyweight by posting a series of heavyweight videos, Adesanya vowed that he would not be putting on weight quite so blatantly.
Israel Adesanya has described Jon Jones as ‘stupid’ for how he was trying to put on weight
Jones has teased that he will step up to heavyweight from light-heavyweight in the near future
‘That’s Jon “Blow” Jones downfall,’ Adesanya told Submission Radio.
‘Like, “I need to move up in weight, pack on the size.” Some people are just stupid, they play the game so stupid.
‘I’ve done it at kickboxing, I weighed in at heavyweight with my clothes on and a tray of Dunkin Donuts in my hand, and I was like 90-something kilograms. Like, skills, bro.
‘You want to put on size? Alright. Is your body used to being that heavy? Are you used to moving around that heavy with the work rate you were doing with all your previous fights? Yeah, I just don’t play the game like everyone else.
‘I’ll just chill, I’ll stay me. I’m gonna get stronger, I always do, but I’m not gonna purposely put on muscle just so I can be at a weight class. Stupid.’
Blachowicz won the light-heavyweight title when he stopped Dominick Reyes at UFC 253
Adesanya looks set to put his middleweight duties on hold to face Blachowicz in a championship showdown provisionally set for March 2021.
He revealed this week the major reason why he is targeting a second title at light-heavyweight rather than defending his current belt.
He admitted that after seeing Robert Whittaker beat Jared Cannonier at UFC 254, he wanted to try his hand at another weight having already beaten the number one contender for his current belt in October last year.
Adesanya dominated Paulo Costa to defend his middleweight title at the end of September
Originally, Adesanya had wanted to fight again this year having dominated Paulo Costa in September to defend his middleweight title and remain unbeaten.
But his team are helping Junior Fa prepare for a boxing match with Joseph Parker and Adesanya is also one of Fa’s sparring partners.
His return will have to wait until 2021 and Blachowicz’s March suggestion could work for all parties.
