Yordan Alvarez's follow-up to his award-winning 2019 season has ended after just two games.
The Houston Astros designated hitter, the unanimous choice for American League Rookie of the Year, will have season-ending knee surgery next week, manager Dusty Baker said Wednesday.
Alvarez missed all of preseason camp and the first three weeks of the regular season recovering from COVID-19, but finally made his season debut on Friday — hitting a home run in his first at-bat.
However, the knee issues he battled this spring cropped up again as he was scratched from Sunday's lineup and went on the injured list Tuesday. Alvarez will have surgery to repair a partial tear of the patellar tendon in his right knee, Baker said.
