Fantasy Injury Updates: Chris Carson, Joe Mixon, Carlos Hyde impacting Week 11 waiver pickups

Over the past few weeks, the Seahawks and Bengals have had to rely on backup running backs to carry the load in their backfields. The Seahawks have been without Chris Carson (foot) and Carlos Hyde (hamstring) for three games and now will hope to get at least one back on a short week to snap a two-game losing streak. Meanwhile, the Bengals have been without Joe Mixon (foot) for three games, as well, and it’s unclear whether he’ll return to action. These injuries are having an impact on our Week 11 fantasy RB rankings and the waiver wire strategy of fantasy football owners fighting for playoff spots as the fantasy regular season winds down.

Is Chris Carson playing this week?

Carson (foot) has missed the past three games for the Seahawks, and ahead of a Thursday night game against the Cardinals, there appeared to be some optimism about his injury. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Sunday that Carson is expected to play in the contest, but now just a couple of days later, his status is a bit less clear.

According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that he’s unsure if Carson will play on Thursday night. Given that Carroll tends to be optimistic about his players’ injuries, this is important news and should indicate that Carson is in danger of missing Thursday’s contest. At best, he will probably be deemed “questionable” for the game and could be a game-time decision.

If Carson can’t go, the Seahawks will either rely on Carlos Hyde (hamstring) as the top back or they’ll turn to the trro of Alex Collins, DeeJay Dallas, and Travis Homer once again. Either Hyde or Collins will be worth starting against the Cardinals defense, so feel free to add either, as they both represent potential RB2s depending on Carson’s status.

WEEK 11 WAIVER WIRE: Top pickups | Buy-low, sell-high

Is Joe Mixon playing this week?

It was anticipated that Mixon (foot) would have a chance to return for the Bengals in Week 10 following their bye. Instead, Mixon was a non-participant at practice all week and was declared doubtful for the game against the Steelers before being downgraded to out.

Mixon has now missed three games in a row, and there are questions about whether he will play against Washington. According to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com, Bengals coach Zac Taylor isn’t sure if he’ll have Mixon for the team’s Week 11 contest. That will make Mixon a player to watch in practice this week, and it probably indicates that he will be questionable.

If Mixon can’t play once again, Giovani Bernard will get a chance to lead the team’s backfield. Bernard had just 47 yards against a tough Steelers defense but would have a better chance of scoring against a Washington defense that has struggled to stop the likes of Wayne Gallman and D’Andre Swift in recent weeks. Bernard has four TDs in his past four games, so if he starts, he can be trusted as a volume-based RB2.

WEEK 11 PPR RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Is Carlos Hyde playing this week?

Hyde’s status is extremely important for fantasy owners this week, as he could be the bell-cow back if he’s healthy because of Carson’s uncertain status. According to ESPN’s Brady Henderson, Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said that Hyde is “a little bit ahead” of Carson, so that should indicate that he’ll have a chance to suit up on Thursday night. Still, this needs to be watched because Carroll is ever the optimist about injuries, as mentioned earlier.

If Hyde is out (along with Carson), Alex Collins will be the Seahawks back to own. Collins racked up 47 yards and a TD on 12 touches against the Rams last week and should be a solid RB2 against Arizona.
