The Giants fell short in a last-gasp effort to tie the game and lost to the Buccaneers 25-23 on “Monday Night Football” after failing to convert a 2-point attempt.
The potential game-tying play with 28 seconds remaining sparked controversy on social media as officials picked up a flag that was originally thrown for pass interference against Tampa Bay.
Bucs rookie Antoine Winfield Jr. broke up a Daniel Jones pass intended for Dion Lewis but was flagged late on the play. After a conference, officials ruled Winfield did not commit PI, sealing the win for Tampa Bay.
Giants coach Joe Judge wasn’t happy with the decision to pick up the flag. He could be seen pulling down his mask after the game and saying “It’s a f—ing joke.” (WARNING: Obscene language below.)
Judge wasn’t quite as colorful in his postgame comments, but it was clear he still wasn’t pleased.
“I thought they made the right call when they threw the flag,” Judge said. “So I’m not sure why it got picked up. We had a pretty good view. I know they can’t use the Jumbotron to (view the) replay. We had a pretty clear view of that as well. But I thought (field judge Nathan Jones) made the right call the first time, and I thought, ‘Normally, your first instinct is right.’
The Giants are now 1-7 after eight games in Judge’s first season at the helm, though at times they have played better than their record shows. Five of their seven losses have been by eight points or fewer.
