Washington QB Kyle Allen suffers gruesome ankle injury, replaced by Alex Smith

Washington quarterback Kyle Allen suffered a horrific ankle injury against the Giants on Sunday.

The injury occurred in the first quarter, when Giants safety Jabrill Peppers chased down Allen, leading to a leg whip. Allen’s leg was caught under Peppers’ leg, indirectly causing the brutal injury. A flag was thrown on the play for Peppers’ hit, but it didn’t appear to be malicious or unsportsmanlike.

Allen’s leg was placed in an air cast, and he was carted off. Alex Smith, who in 2018 suffered a gruesome leg injury of his own, took over for Allen at quarterback. Smith made his return to the NFL in Week 5.

Washington labeled Allen’s injury as an ankle injury, and unsurprisingly ruled him out for the remainder of the game.

He waved to the fans in attendance before exiting the field.
