NFL DFS Picks Week 1: QB sleepers, values

Kyler Murray, Cardinals at 49ers (DK: $6,400 | FD: $7,700)

A popular breakout pick this season, Murray hopes to have the same sophomore success that Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson experienced in 2018 and ’19, respectively. He may not earn MVP honors like those other guys did, but he will certainly improve mightily from his debut season. He has bulked up, improved upon his chemistry with teammates, and, oh, he now has DeAndre Hopkins to target. San Francisco’s front seven remains strong, but its secondary can still be shaky at times. Fire away with Kyler, who remains a relative value even in the upper tier, at least on DraftKings.

Cam Newton, Patriots vs. Dolphins (DK: $6,100 | FD: $7,400)

Picking Newton in his Patriots debut obviously comes with risks, but it also comes with huge upside. Coach Bill Belichick and OC Josh McDaniels prepare their quarterbacks better than any other tandem in the history of the NFL, and they will have Newton more than prepared for the season opener at home against a shaky Miami secondary (Dolphins ranked 27th versus QBs last season).

Jimmy Garoppolo, 49ers vs. Cardinals (DK: $5,800 | FD: $7,300)

Talk about a bargain! Eight months after leading his 49ers to Super Bowl LIV, Jimmy G opens the 2020 season at home against a Cardinals team that ranked last against quarterbacks in 2019. He still has a back brace on, he’s lost Emmanuel Sanders to the Saints, and Deebo Samuel (foot) still looks banged up, but there’s too much potential in this matchup to avoid the 28-year-old stud.

WEEK 1 STANDARD RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Week 1 DraftKings, FanDuel Picks: RB sleepers, values

Austin Ekeler, Chargers at Bengals (DK: $7,000 | FD: $7,700)

Ekeler finally finds himself the bell cow of the Chargers backfield, no longer splitting touches with Melvin Gordon. That’s great news for him, his fantasy owners, and the Bolts. The 25-year old has averaged 4.8 yards per carry since coming into the league in 2017, and he’s even more dangerous as a receiver. His 92 receptions and 993 receiving yards both ranked second to only Christian McCaffrey among RBs last year, and the Bengals ranked 26th against RBs last season.

Jonathan Taylor, Colts at Jaguars (DK: $5,700 | FD: $5,300)

Taylor appeared on a lot of analysts’ preseason sleepers and breakouts lists for a reason. The 5-10, 225-pound Wisconsin product rushed for 6,174 yards (6.7 yards per carry) in his three collegiate years and had 26 combined touchdowns just last year (21 on the ground, five in the air). He has a superb offensive line and a quarterback in Phillip Rivers who loves to utilize his backs. Considering the Jaguars were sixth worst against RBs last year, $5,700 and $5,300, respectively, for this kid seems like an absolute steal even with Marlon Mack still taking half the carries.

Zack Moss, Bills vs. Jets (DK: $4,400 | FD: $4,800)

The Bills are already many pundits’ pick to come out of the AFC East this season, and for good reason. They have a great defense, an up-and-coming QB in Josh Allen, and a dynamic running back tandem. Devin Singletary broke out in the latter part of his rookie season last year, but 2020 rookie Zack Moss might usurp him quickly this season. Moss seems more sure-handed and strong between tackles and might fit the Bills’ offense better than Singletary. If nothing else, his goal-line potential at home against the Jets makes his FD and DK prices good values.

FanDuel, DraftKings Picks Week 1: WR sleepers, values

Chris Godwin, Buccaneers at Saints (DK: $7,100 | FD: $7,700)

Godwin broke out in a major way in 2019, hauling in 86 passes for 1,333 yards in an All-Star sophomore campaign. Now he has Tom Brady throwing to him, a man known for short and intermediate accuracy. Brady loves smart, athletic, and hard-working young wide receivers, and Godwin is all three. He’s a solid upper-tier value against a Saints squad that perennially finishes at the bottom of the barrel against wideouts.

Allen Robinson II, Bears at Lions (DK: $6,500 | FD: $7,200)

Robinson’s big breakout has to happen soon, right? He has the size, skills, and athleticism to make it happen, but his success hinges largely on Chicago’s quarterback play. A season-opener against 2019’s second-worst secondary seems like a good place to start for A-Rob. He’s priced like a WR2, especially on DK, but he should produce like a WR1.

Emmanuel Sanders, Saints vs. Buccaneers (DK: $5,700 | FD: $5,400)

Sanders continues to serve as one of the steadiest slot receivers in the NFL year in and year out, no matter which franchise he joins. After a successful campaign in Denver, then a Super Bowl run in San Francisco. He now takes his talents to the Bayou, where future Hall-of-Famer Drew Brees will be zipping him targets. The only team worse than the Saints against wide receivers last season was Tampa Bay, so don’t be surprised if Manny finds at least seven catches and reaches pay dirt.

N’Keal Harry, Patriots vs. Dolphins (DK: $4,400 | FD: $5,100)

Here’s a risky but potentially rewarding pick. Harry found himself plagued by injuries in his rookie season last year, but he has looked good as of late in Patriots camp. His role will be elevated this season, and if he can stay healthy and build a rapport with Cam Newton, he may just come away with a handful of contested catches in the end zone. Miami ranked third worst against receivers last season, so slot Harry in if you want to utilize more expensive players in your RB1 or WR1 positions.

WEEK 1 PPR RANKINGS:
Quarterback | Running back | Wide receiver | Tight end | D/ST | Kicker

Week 1 NFL DFS Picks: TE sleepers, values

Hayden Hurst, Falcons vs. Seahawks (DK: $4,300 | FD: $5,300)

A popular sleeper pick in the preseason, Hurst is Matt Ryan’s newest toy at the tight end position. The former Raven is big (6-4, 245 pounds) and sure-handed (he caught 30-of-39 targets last season), and he runs routes well. He will perform well now that he’s out of the shadows of star Ravens tight end Mark Andrews, and Seattle surprisingly ranked 29th in the league against TEs last year. Pick Hurst first.

T.J. Hockenson, Lions vs. Bears (DK: $4,200 | FD: $5,300)

Hockenson looked like he was running away with the top-sleeper designation at the beginning of the 2019 season, but inconsistency and injury issues plagued him from then on. With Matthew Stafford healthy and Hockenson’s ankle injury a thing of the past, the No. 8 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft looks to get back on track against a Bears team that ranked 28th against tight ends last season.

Week 1 NFL DFS values: D/ST sleepers

Patriots vs. Dolphins (DK: $3,200 | FD: Patriots: $4,600)

Last but not least, pick the steady Patriots defense at home in their season-opener against division rival Miami. The Pats love drawing the Dolphins early in the season, and they are almost always ready defensively for Game 1. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and his young set of weapons could be up against it Sunday.
