Warriors try disallowed for obstruction in Broncos’ controversial captain’s challenge

The Brisbane Broncos have ridden their luck against the New Zealand Warriors with a massive captain’s challenge taking away a try.

The Broncos were leading 16-12 with 18 minutes remaining with the Warriors attacking after a brilliant 40-20.

Shifting the ball wide, Isaiah Papali’i ran a decoy but slid into Anthony Milford with the ball shifting quickly behind the play.

The referee called try but the Broncos sent the decision upstairs as a captain’s challenge.

A brilliant call, the Bunker sided with Brisbane, saying Milford was obstructed a

Fox League’s Greg Alexander said he had seen calls discussing whether the quickly shifting ball had meant that the obstructed player wasn’t going to have a role in the play anyway.

“I don’t think Milford shifting out changed anything Boyd was thinking,” he said.

But the decision quickly came down that the Warriors had been advantaged by the obstruction.

“My goodness,” Dan Ginnane said. “What a call – the first successful Broncos captain’s challenge.”

The Warriors still go the ball back with Darius Boyd having been off-side.

A HUGE Captain's Challenge from the Broncos has denied the Warriors a try…Do you agree with the decision ⁉️ 🤔

Warriors halfback Blake Green spoke to referee Chris Butler asking for clarification.

“He’s fallen over in the line and it’s been called an obstruction, a disadvantage, but he falls over. Can you explain that to me?”

Butler said: “They can’t be disadvantaged by a player impacting them so they’ve done nothing wrong.”

Alexander said it was a “black and white” rule, when “Milford wasn’t going to get there anyway”.

Ginnane said “It might be close to the best captain’s challenge we’ve seen”.

While the Warriors were denied with a knock on in that set of six, the homesick Warriors hit back dramatically to snatch the win.

But NRL world were quick to savage the call.

That is the most disgraceful decision.

What they hell are we talking about there. That's a try every day day of the week. Now we are finding ways to not give tries and bailing bad decisions out. #NRL

I do not care if that's to the letter of the law… the law needs to be blown up, along with the Bunker…

How to make a terrible game even worse? Get the bunker involved #NRLWarriorsBroncos

That’s a dud call #NRLWarriorsBroncos

Thats BS #nrlwarriorsbroncos

The Warriors made sure it wasn’t going to be the defining moment of their season however with Wayde Egan muscling his way across the line and Ken Maumalo going over in the corner before Papali’i romped over for the win 26-16 victory.

Incredibly, it shows the Broncos’ rock bottom has found even greater depths.

Man Utd ‘agreeing’ Jadon Sancho terms is bad news for two Ole Gunnar Solskjaer players

It appears Manchester United are edging closer to the signing of Jadon Sancho. It’s an open secret the Red Devils have been hoping to recruit the England international, who enjoyed a stunning Bundesliga campaign for Borussia Dortmund. Yet if news of him agreeing personal terms is bang on the money then that spells trouble for Daniel James and Tahith Chong.

Manchester United want to sign Sancho.

In their eyes he’s the replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo they’ve been hunting for in the 11 years since the Portugal international upped and left for Real Madrid in a huge £80million transfer deal.

Sancho was terrific for Dortmund in the Bundesliga, scoring 17 goals and registering 17 assists from 34 matches.

And United believe he’s got all the attributes to succeed at Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward plot a path back to the top.

On Friday, The Transfer Window Podcast’s Ian McGarry claimed Sancho had agreed personal terms with the Red Devils ahead of a potential move to the Theatre of Dreams.

“It is our understanding that Sancho has agreed in principle in the last two weeks a five-year contract with Manchester United which will pay him initially £140,000 per week but increasing to around £200,000 per week over the course of that deal,” he said.

  • Man Utd set Jones transfer price as staff’s shock at Lingard emerges

“The player’s agent has recently been busy doing other deals, notably with Saka’s new deal with Arsenal but is still hopeful that United will be able to agree a fee with Borussia Dortmund.

“Manchester United have been rather robust in a briefing this week that they will not pay any more than £50m for Jadon Sancho which of course is at least less than half of Borussia Dortmund’s original valuation of the England international.”

And that’s bad news for United duo James and Chong.

James was signed as a Sancho alternative last summer after the Red Devils’ failure to qualify for the Champions League cost them a shot at the Dortmund star.

The Wales international initially flourished, scoring three goals from his first four matches for his new club.

But James has struggled for consistency in the time since and is currently behind Mason Greenwood in the Old Trafford pecking order.

That means that, should Sancho arrive, the 22-year-old may struggle to get the sort of opportunities he’s been afforded this term.

When United signed James they envisaged him being more of a squad player.

But with the club loaning out Alexis Sanchez in the summer – and selling Romelu Lukaku – James has had to step up.

He’d have Mason Greenwood and Sancho ahead of him at United next term and that means he may be destined to warm the bench, rather than be a regular starter.

It would also spell danger for Chong, too.

United managed to convince the Dutchman into penning a contract extension earlier in the season, with Solskjaer making it clear he’s a part of his plans.

But with the winger also getting chances on the right wing, Sancho’s arrival would further complicate his path to the first team.

Both Chong and James are capable of playing on the left, too.

But neither would get in ahead of Marcus Rashford, while Solskjaer also has the luxury of fielding Anthony Martial there as well.

Fans have a right to be excited about the prospect of Sancho moving to United when the transfer window reopens.

But Chong and James can be forgiven for feeling apprehensive about a potential blockbuster deal for the Dortmund star.

Leicester vs Crystal Palace predicted line-ups: Team news ahead of Premier League fixture today

Leicester host Crystal Palace in the Premier League this afternoon as Brendan Rodgers’ side continue their pursuit of a first win since the return of English football.

Palace have experienced mixed fortunes since the resumption of the sport in June, following a victory over strugglers Bournemouth with a 4-0 defeat by Liverpool and a 1-0 loss to Sean Dyche’s Burnley.

Rodgers will be keen for his players to bounce back from Wednesday’s 2-1 defeat against Everton, and the former Liverpool coach will be very aware that his team’s chances of qualifying for the Champions League are at risk of slipping completely, with Chelsea, Manchester United and Wolves gradually closing the gap to the third-placed Foxes with six games left.

Palace, meanwhile, are safe in 12th place on 42 points, though a strong finish to the term could even see the Eagles earn a European spot of their own.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of today’s game.

When is it and what time is kick-off?

The match will begin at 3pm on Saturday 4 July at the King Power.

With the city of Leicester now in a local lockdown due to a spike in coronavirus cases, there was initially some discussion that the game would be held in a neutral venue, but that has not proven to be the case.

How can I watch it online and on TV?

The match will be broadcast live on Sky Sports Premier League.

Subscribers can also use the Sky Sports app to stream the game live.

    Team news

James Maddison was declared fit enough to play the second half for Leicester against Everton earlier this week, and the midfielder could get a full run-out today. Meanwhile, Ricardo Pereira is still a long-term absentee for the hosts due to his cruciate ligament injury.

Christian Benteke was not named in Palace’s squad to face Burnley due to a muscle strain, but the striker could be healthy enough to return for today’s fixture.

    Predicted line-ups

Leicester: Schmeichel, Justin, Evans, Soyuncu, Chilwell, Ndidi, Albrighton, Maddison, Tielemans, Iheanacho, Vardy

Crystal Palace: Guaita, Ward, Dann, Cahill, Van Aanholt, Townsend, McCarthy, Milivojevic, McArthur, Zaha, Ayew

    Leicester: 8/13

    Draw: 13/5

    Crystal Palace: 5/1

Leicester have more to play for than Palace, but the Foxes have been burrowing deeper into their rut over the last week. While Palace might not be the most motivated side in the league right now, they are more than competent enough to hold the hosts here. Leicester 1-1 Crystal Palace.

Norwich vs Brighton prediction: How will Premier League fixture play out today?

Norwich City and Brighton meet in the Premier League on Saturday.

The early kick-off sees a crunch battle around the relegation zone, one which the hosts must realistically win if they want to avoid the drop.

The Canaries have restarted in woeful form and were heavily beaten in midweek, so Daniel Farke will expect a big reaction in a more winnable fixture.

How can I watch it online and on TV?

The match will be broadcast live on BT Sport 1 and BT Sport Ultimate.

    Team news

Norwich are without Christoph Zimmermann and Grant Hanley at the back, but Timm Klose could return after suspension.

Brighton could be without Adam Webster, while Jose Izquierdo is out.

    Predicted line-ups

Norwich: Krul; Aarons, Godfrey, Klose, Lewis; Tettey, Trybull; Buendia, Duda, Cantwell; Pukki.

Brighton: Ryan; Lamptey, Dunk, Duffy, Burn; Trossard, Bissouma, Propper, Mooy; Mac Allister; Maupay.

    Norwich: 5/2

    Draw: 37/15

    Brighton: 13/10

Brighton looked in far better shape after the restart than before it, but paid the price for a defensive-minded start against Man United last time out.

They are far better off taking a forward-thinking approach and should do so here, but Norwich know this is one of their must-win games if they want to beat the drop and could pull off a surprise result to give themselves hope.

Lewis Hamilton backed to continue frenetic lifestyle in quest for F1 supremacy

Lewis Hamilton has been backed to carry on his fast and furious lifestyle in order to become the greatest Formula One driver of all-time.

The Mercedes star begins his quest to equal Michael Schumacher's record tally of seven world titles on Sunday and is only eight wins away from usurping the German great as the sport's most successful race winner.

At 35, Hamilton has entered the twilight years of his career and already has a range of outside interests including his own clothing collection with fashion giant Tommy Hilfiger.

He also counts Will Smith, Justin Bieber, Neymar, Kanye West and Naomi Campbell among his celebrity friends – and has flirted with a career in music when he parks his car in the garage for the final time.

And former F1 ace Martin Brundle – who raced against the likes of Niki Lauda, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Schumacher – reckons Hamilton can successfully juggle his racing and off-track exploits.

"There was a time a few years ago where he took a lot of criticism for not being focused enough," said Brundle, now a pundit for Sky Sports F1.

"He seems like a workaholic to me. He has got his fashion, his music and all the things that are important to him in his life.

"Then he will be scuba diving somewhere in the world – he's all over the place. He just seems to compartmentalise it all.

"And he looks completely chiselled doesn't he, so god knows when he has time to get into the gym because he zooms around with all these different elements in his life.

"I don't think he has many idle hours in his life either. Then he just rocks up and delivers because he has the natural talent and the natural speed.

"It has contributed to his success. His ability to not fret over every lap, every lap time. He goes away, does what he does, comes back and focuses on F1."

Indeed, Hamilton, whose current £36million-a-year contract with Mercedes runs out at the end of the year, is chasing records that some once thought would last a lifetime.

Brundle reckons he has even more to offer and has tipped the Brit to extend his stay at Mercedes.

He added: "Lewis just doesn't seem to age does he. What has Lewis got left? Will he be doing this in his 40s? No he won't.

"I could see him doing one more contract. I think he has more to offer yet.

"When you see him all chiselled like that on social media, you need some motivation to get like that ahead of the season."

F1 starts its season in Austria on Sunday, nearly four months later than planned due to the coronavirus pandemic and against a very different backdrop.

Hamilton spent lockdown playing a prominent role in the Black Lives Matter movement following George Floyd's tragic death.

The Brit has been open about being subjected to racism himself throughout his career and referenced a time in 2007 when fans turned up in black face at a circuit.

And the six-time world champ, who remains the sport's only black driver, has been applauded by Brundle for leading the drive for change.

"It's very important and I admire him, he added. "Through his talent and achievements, the six world titles, and his social media following, Lewis has a global platform. He's used it incredibly well and I admire him for that.

    Sport top stories

"He's revered in our business. He's considered to be one of the greatest drivers of all the time if not the great driver of all time. I've seen him being crowdsurfed by the fans at Silverstone. He's worshipped by the fans.

"Lewis is very much up on a pedestal in that respect. But then I don't know what happened in his earlier days in karting and junior racing. He has talked about that.

"What has been going on is really powerful and Lewis has played a key role in that. Formula 1 isn't a diverse business particularly. Motorsport in general is not."

The 2020 F1 season sees Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes defend their world titles. The British star is also targeting a seventh drivers’ championship, which would draw him level with the iconic Michael Schumacher.

Hamilton’s most recent title came during a dominant season in 2019.

The Mercedes star won 11 races and finished 87 points clear of team-mate Valtteri Bottas.

He is now into the last year of his Mercedes contract but is yet to make a decision on his future.

Rumours of a switch to Ferrari have been doing the rounds but Silver Arrows team boss Toto Wolff is confident Hamilton will stick around.

“I think it is the obvious pairing going forward,” Wolff said at Mercedes’ car launch.

“We would like to have the fastest man in the car and I know that Lewis wants to have the fastest car. There is a mutual outcome.”

The Pools’ Mark O’Donnell said: “Six-time world champion Lewis Hamilton is odds-on to retain his title for the 4th year running, with Charles Leclerc second favourite at 9/2 just ahead of Max Verstappen 5/1, with 2019 runner-up Valtteri Bottas at 11/2.

“Leclerc, who finished 4th last season with 2 wins and 10 podiums, is the more fancied of the two Ferrari drivers as the team becomes the first to reach 1000 GPs.

“Beyond that, the odds get much longer, with Alex Albon, 8th in 2019 after some strong performances, likely to be looking to secure his Red Bull drive and get a podium finish for the first time.”

“McLaren, whilst 250-1 to win the constructors championship, will be hoping to continue their improvement and beat their sole podium of last year.”

John Morris heaps praise on Shaun Johnson after Sharks win third straight over Titans

The Cronulla Sharks have won three in a row to romp into the NRL top eight after a crushing 40-10 win over the Gold Coast Titans.

It was a tale of two halves with the Titans well in the match at the break but the Sharks blowing the Gold Coast off the park in the second half with 28-unanswered points.

The win continues to turn around the Sharks’ season with just three weeks ago John Morris was under mounting pressure to come up with results in the Shire with the club’s CEO forced to come out and say Morris would be the coach in 2021.

Life is looking a lot more rosy after a string of wins over the Bulldogs, Sea Eagles and Titans, reaching 40 points in each of their last two games and winning three straight for the first time since the end of 2018.

The Sharks also had to do it without the injury prone Matt Moylan who suffered a suspected hamstring injury in the first half.

Morris feared it would be “a couple of weeks” for Moylan.

After Moylan left the field, Shaun Johnson continued to answer critics with another brilliant performance, showing the consistency that the Kiwi star has often been criticised for.

While a wayward pass led to a try for the Titans’ fullback Corey Thompson, Johnson set up two tries in the second half and brought up his league-leading 12th try assist of the season.

“He’s just starting to get the balance right Shauny,” Morris said. “He’s worked so hard on his game and he had a really solid pre-season and I was really confident that he was going to have a good year.

“He gets marked pretty hard in the media, a lot of people expect the brilliant Shaun Johnson every time he touches the ball but we all know he needs to play his part in our team and manage the side and steer us around the park as well as bringing those offensive skills into the game.

“For me it’s about putting him in positions on the field to get the ball going at a retreating defensive line. He’s kicked really well, he is goal kicking is really good, he’s leading the try assists, he’s up there on the Dally M leaderboard, there’s no doubt he’s having a fantastic year for us.”

And while the Titans may be considered one of the NRL’s lesser teams, the commentators were still positive on the club, who made the Sharks work for it at 12-10 at the break.

“They’re definitely building for the future aren’t they the Titans,” Corey Parker said on Fox League.

“They’ve got a new coach, they’ve got some players leaving at the end of the year, they’ve recruited some players but the youth and the future is bright for the Titans. They’ll go on to lose this one but their attitude on most games, they turn up and they’re willing to have crack.”
