Follow all the latest from the Tuscan Grand Prix as Lewis Hamilton starts on pole looking to extend his lead at the top of the world championship standings.
Hamilton has a 47-point advantage over his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas and is already closing in on an extraordinary seventh world title. Bottas starts second on the grid with the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon locking out the second row.
As they take on what is their home track, the Mugello Circuit in Tuscany, Ferrari’s struggles continue with Sebastian Vettel starting 14th on the grid, although his teammate Charles Leclerc begins in fifth. Race starts 2.10pm BST and you can follow all the latest below:
1 Bottas, 2 Hamilton, 3 Leclerc, 4 Albon, 5 Stroll, 6 Ricciardo, 7 Perez, 8 Norris, 9 Kvyat, Ocon 10th.
So we sit and wait as debris is cleared from the finish straight. It could be a few minutes yet. An intriguing race to come in Tuscany.
Debris everywhere all over the start-finish straight, and they are coming back into the pitlane. Magnussen, Goivinazzi and Sainz all out, and we only have 13 cars left. Sainz seemed to be at fault, suddenly bursting forwards as the green lights came on and just rear-ended Grosjean and others in front. Carnage ensued.
Nicholas Latife is one of those out. Romain Grosjean too, who says: “That was f*****g stupid!” I think it was Carlos Sainz doing the stupidity.
A huge crash! As the lights went green Bottas charged forwards and Hamilton followed, but the rest had bunched up and as they restarted there was a huge puff of smoke as several came together. Safety car back out…
The safety car is about to head back into the pitlane. So it’s Bottas, Hamilton, Leclerc and Albon in the first four spots. Then Stroll, Ricciardo and Perez, before Norris in eighth, Kvyat in ninth and Ocon 10th.
Pierre Gasly is another who went spinning on the opening lap, and he’s also out of the race. Replays show he should not have attempted a mad dart into a gap that just wasn’t there, and he ended up bumping into several others as he crashed out. Not a popular man in the paddock this evening.
: The safety car leads Bottas around the track. Replays show just how bad Hamilton’s start was, and had Verstappen not had a power issue he would have overtaken the championship leader too.
Verstappen was minding his own business when he was rear ended, very unlucky. Meanwhile a spinning Carlos Sainz provided an obstacle for Vettel, who clipped him and may need to pit.
Valtteri Bottas jumps past Lewis Hamilton into the first corner! And Max Verstappen spins out! Wow.
