ARSENAL (5-3-2)

Emiliano Martinez – 7

Relatively quiet game but again showed he can be a permanent replacement for injured keeper Bernd Leno.

Shkodran Mustafi – 7

Made a few mistakes in the face of City’s early domination but recovered his composure. Nearly scored with a header.

David Luiz – 8

Showed why Arteta has such faith in him by bossing the back line and using his passing ability to set up potential goalscoring opportunities.

Kieran Tierney – 8

A revelation since return to fitness for the restart and finding best form when needed most.

Arsenal’s defenders put on a monstrous performance to hold City off after relentless attacks

Hector Bellerin – 6

Strong in defence and attack as he showed his return to fitness is complete.

Dani Ceballos – 6

Arteta wants to make the Real Madrid loan man a permanent fixture in his midfield and he did not let him down

Granit Xhaka – 7

Showed great responsibility, repeatedly helping out his defence with key tackles and blocks.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles – 7

Another unfamiliar role on the left for the versatile Englishman, but he played Riyad Mahrez out of the game.

Nicolas Pepe – 7

Great delivery for the opening goal and played with confidence and attacking intent throughout.

Alexandre Lacazette – 6

Solid hold up play and important defensively too. Replaced late on.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 8

Wasted a great chance before he scored two world class goals in his first FA Cup appearance this season.

Torreira (on for Lacazette 78)

Kolasinac (on for Ceballos 88)

Subs not used: Macey, Holding, Sokratis, Smith, Nelson, Saka

Mikel Arteta – 9

The pupil turned the tables on his master by getting Arsenal to take City on at their own game.

Ederson – 6

An unexpectedly busy first half for the Brazilian keeper in which he kept City in the match.

Kyle Walker – 6

A right-back in name only as City had so much of the ball he played more like a winger early on but not his greatest night.

Eric Garcia – 6

A quiet game for the promising young defender.

Manchester City’s defenders had uncharacteristically poor performances as they fell to defeat

Aymeric Laporte – 5

An uncharacteristically poor performance. Sloppy in his positioning and passing when Arsenal were on top.

Benjamin Mendy – 5

Erratic display from such a talented player. Played Aubameyang onside for second goal.

Ilkay Gundogan – 5

Poor distribution from a usually reliable passer allowed Arsenal to regain possession when they needed it most. Replaced by Foden.

David Silva – 6

The stage was set for City’s captain to shine, but he did not make the impact expected of such a brilliant player.

Kevin De Bruyne – 6

Dominated the midfield from the outset, creative going forward and strong in the tackle when Arsenal’s play needed breaking up. Faded as Arsenal grew in confidence only to retune his radar after the break.

Benjamin Mendy had an erratic display at Wembley and played Aubameyang onside for goal

Riyad Mahrez – 5

Struggled to cope with Arsenal’s tactics and got little out his battle with Maitland-Niles. Replaced after 65 minutes.

Gabriel Jesus – 5

Hardly had a kick in the first half and increasingly looks like he is not the long-term solution to injured Sergio Aguero.

Raheem Sterling – 6

Tireless running from the England man but wayward shooting indicated he was not at his best

Foden (on for Mahrez 66 mins)

Rodri (on for Gundogan 66 mins)

Subs not used:

Carson, Stones, Zinchenko, Bernardo, Fernandinho, Cancelo, Otamendi

Pep Guardiola – 5

His players did not deliver for him when he needed them most. Frustrated.
