Arsenal can finish in the Premier League top four if they sign Houssem Aouar – but only if Chelsea and Manchester United have poor seasons. That is the opinion of former Gunners midfielder Stewart Robson. Lyon star Aouar is Arsenal’s top transfer target for the last week of the summer window.
Arsenal have already seen at least one bid turned down for the 22-year-old but are set to return with an improved offer this week.
Ahead of Monday’s trip to reigning champions Liverpool, Arsenal had won their opening two Premier League matches of the season.
Robson has been impressed with Mikel Arteta’s side and reckons the addition of Aouar would help their chances of gaining a Champions League qualification spot.
But he says it still may not be enough if Chelsea and United pick up form.

Asked if Aouar can lead Arsenal to the top four, Robson told ESPN FC: “They can finish in the top four if we don’t see anything better than [what] Chelsea and Manchester United [have shown] at the moment, because Arsenal are playing well, they’ve got a 100 per cent record, they’re doing well in the cups, they look a different team under the new manager Arteta.
“Aouar would be an excellent addition because I think he is a very good footballer.

“They can end up in the top four but I think they will be reliant on both Chelsea and Manchester United having a poor season.”
Chelsea have picked up four points from their first three games of the campaign and had to come back from three goals down to secure a 3-3 draw at West Brom on Saturday.

Meanwhile, United were extremely fortunate to come away from Brighton with a 3-2 win to pick up their first league victory.
Arsenal are also linked with Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey.
And former Gunners left-back Nigel Winterburn reckons Partey would be the more worthwhile signing for Arteta.
Winterburn told FreeSuperTips: “[Partey] takes the ball in tight situations and has the power and the ability to go past the opposing midfield players.
“Once you start to eliminate in this way, as Partey does, you tend to open space in and around the opposition’s defence.
“With Arsenal’s pace up front, they can take advantage of this and cause some damage.
“Mikel Arteta is not totally happy with the midfield that he currently has and looks like he wants to change it up.
“As always with Arsenal it takes a long time to get things done. We’re just going to have to again wait and see, but I don’t believe that Arsenal have the money to bring them both in.
“Also, when discussing ideal signings, we forget to consider whether those players want to join Arsenal, and that’s the most important thing.
“So, we’ve got to wait and see, but my preference of the two would be Thomas Partey.”
