Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas has urged Arsenal to increase their latest offer for Houssem Aouar if they want to sign him before the transfer window closes.
Gunners chief Mikel Arteta is a big fan of the France international and has been chasing the midfielder's signature for the last few weeks.
Arsenal have, so far, tabled two offers for the 22-year-old's services, both of which have been rejected by the Ligue 1 giants.
The Gunners' latest offer for Aouar is understood to have been in the region of £32million, which is well short of Lyon's valuation.
Aulas is willing to let Aouar – who made his 100th league appearance for Lyon last weekend – leave if the club's asking price is met.
And to emphasise his point, he cited the club-record fee – £72 million – Arsenal paid last summer to sign Nicolas Pepe.
He told Le Progres: “If Pepe is worth the price that they paid for him, then Houssem, who is an international player, is worth more than €30m.”
Arteta was quizzed about Arsenal's plans for the remainder of the window after their 3-1 defeat to Liverpool on Monday, which ended their 100 per cent start to the new season.
Mikel Arteta's Gunners have been starved of title glory for a while now – but things could be changing as a new-look Arsenal side plot a course to success.

And the Spaniard was quick to insist there's been no movement on players joining or leaving the club before Monday's deadline.
He said: "We don't have any news on new players and either with players that might leave the football club.
"It's a week to go, I think it's going to be really busy for other clubs because not much business has been done. Let's see what happens."
After seeing Arsenal resoundingly beaten by the defending Premier League champions, Gunners legend Ian Wright has urged Arteta to meet Lyon's demands for Aouar.
"It felt like a training game for Liverpool in respect of Arsenal were saying you can try and get out but we will press you," Wright told Premier League Productions. "You can see that in Liverpool’s team everyone can move forward because Arsenal were starting so deep.
"But what was evident to me was that we didn’t have that person in midfield who was comfortable enough on the ball until Ceballos came on.
"[They need] Someone who they can pass the ball to, who is comfortable to receive it with someone on his back, who can pop it off, who can turn it round the corner.
"From there Arsenal can play but we can’t do that at the moment. That’s why it’s imperative we get Aouar from Lyon.
"He’s someone that can get on the ball and get the forwards going. You saw the chances that Ceballos made when he came on. that’s what Arsenal need."
