Arsenal transfer news: Houssem Aouar ‘swap bid rejected’ as Sokratis nears exit

Arsenal have certainly been busy this summer.

The permanent signings of Gabriel Magalhaes, Willian, Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares, and the return of Dani Ceballos on loan, have allowed Gunners supporters to become relatively excited about the season ahead.

But there looks to be more transfer activity on the horizon.

Continued speculation over several players indicates that Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal hierarchy will be looking to bring in more signings before the window closes on October 5.

While the Premier League campaign kicks off next weekend, Arsenal have one or two areas that need addressing to ensure that they can continue where they left off last term. Here is the latest transfer news involving the Gunners.

Arsenal make cash-plus-player offer for Aouar

Arsenal have had a cash-plus-player bid rejected by Lyon for talented midfielder Houssem Aouar.

French outlet L'Equipe claims the Gunners submitted an offer to the Ligue 1 side last week which included midfielder Matteo Guendouzi.

Arsenal sporting director Edu is understood to be in charge of negotiations with the French club, but the Gunners could face stiff competition to sign the 22-year-old.

The report also outlines that Lyon rejected a deal involving Guendouzi because they do not see a midfield addition as necessary this summer.

City also keen on Lyon star

Arsenal could face significant competition to sign Aouar in this transfer window, with Manchester City credited with interest in the 22-year-old.

According to ESPN, City are keen on bringing the French midfielder to the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola is believed to be an admirer of Aouar after the midfielder played a big role in knocking City out of the Champions League last month.

For Arsenal, added competition from a team of City’s calibre could hamper their chances of signing Aouar before next month’s transfer deadline.

Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos is reportedly on the verge of leaving Arsenal.

According to Il Mattino, as cited by Sport Witness, the Greek defender is close to finalising a move to Serie A side Napoli.

The Gunners currently have a range of central defensive options with the likes of William Saliba and Gabriel entering the first-team picture under Arteta.

Therefore, Sokratis’ departure appears to be one of the more expected transfer moves of this summer’s window.
