Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Thomas Partey, Houssem Aouar, Jorginho plus Premier League updates

Arsenal have until 11pm tonight on transfer deadline day to sign a new midfielder to bolster Mikel Arteta’s squad, and the clock is ticking. Arteta has overseen a huge improvement in the team over recent months, winning the FA Cup and starting strongly in the Premier League, but knows money is tight and he may not get the likes of Thomas Partey, Houssem Aouar or Jorginho to take his squad to the next level.

Partey is the most likely option today as Arsenal have some leverage with Atletico Madrid, given Atletico are hoping to seal a loan deal for the out of favour Gunners midfielder Lucas Torreira. However, Atletico are demanding Partey’s release clause of £45m must be activated before any transfer for the 27-year-old Ghanaian international can be sanctioned, and that has put off the Arsenal hierarchy who want to sell players before they buy.

Negotiations for Aouar appear at breaking point and it is unclear whether Arsenal will go back in today for one final attempt to pick off one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe. Lyon want £54m to close the deal and the Gunners are again in a position where they need to raise some money through player sales before they can consider meeting such an asking price, which could leave Arteta frustrated come the end of the day. Chelsea’s Jorginho is another option, but Arsenal are waiting to see if the Blues can capture West Ham’s Declan Rice first, which would see them free up space in the squad to sell Jorginho to the Gunners. According to German outlet Kicker, Arsenal are planning a late move for defender Omar Rekik

Rekik, who plays his football for Bundesliga outfit Hertha Berlin, could be added to the Arsenal ranks before the close of the transfer window today.

Kicker believes that the 18-year-old, who plays at centre-back, would be signed with a view to being utilised in The Gunners’ U-23 side, as they are already loaded with central defenders.

Arsenal have been attempting to offload unwanted defenders such as Sokratis, Shkodran Mustafi and Calum Chambers, but without any success.

Arsenal blocked Rob Holding’s move to Newcastle, states Toon boss Steve Bruce.

It was thought that the a deal had been agreed between the clubs for Holding to make the move north, but according to Bruce, it was his opposite number at Arsenal who blocked any potential move:

“If something as good as Rob Holding came along, we would have a look, but in terms of that one, it’s changed now because he’s in the Arsenal team,” said Bruce.

“That situation has gone away – fair play to him.”

Fabrizio Romano has again stated that Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey is staying put.

The Spanish side have made it clear all throughout the transfer window that the midfielder wasn’t for sale, and that if Arsenal wanted the player, then they had to buy out his €50m contract.

Romano took to Twitter to once again state that Arsenal won’t be making a late bid for Partey, and that he’s likely to stay in Spain.

Arsenal fans may just have hope that the club can sign Houssem Aouar on deadline day.

The Gunners have been chasing the midfielder all summer, but so far a deal has proved elusive.

Club president Jean-Michel Aulas has stated that the opportunity for Arsenal to sign Aouar is over.

And the player himself spoke to RMC sport and seemed to put the matter to bed:

“I felt that I could still bring things to this team and the club, the club that raised me, quite simply,” said Aouar.

It was believed that Lyon would keep Aouar and Memphis Depay. However Fabrizio Romano believes that Depay is close to a move to Barcelona.

Will Lyon perform a similar u-turn with Aouar, and sanction a move to Arsenal?

Is it the end for Lucas Torreira at Arsenal? The midfielder made a huge impact on arrival, bringing much-needed bite to a soft belly, but he’s since falling down the pecking order and seems unlikely to get any minutes under Mikel Arteta. Reports today suggest he is on his way to Atletico Madrid where Diego Simeone is said to be a big fan of his fellow Argentine.

Bayer Leverkusen are set to capture Sead Kolasinac today for £10m, according to Football London. The wingback has fallen down the pecking order behind homegrown talent like Bukayo Sako and Ainsley Maitland-Niles, while Keiran Tierney also plays on the side. But are those funds enough to fuel a big money move for a midfield target this deadline day? Time will tell.

Matteo Guendouzi is on the verge of securing a deal to leave Arsenal on a season-long loan to Hertha Berlin.

Guendouzi has been frozen out by Mikel Arteta, and The Mirror reports Arsenal have failed in their attempts to secure a permanent transfer for the midfielder which would have freed up valuable funds. Unless a big bid arrives today it is likely the Frenchman will head to the Bundesliga club for a loan move.

Could Jorginho be joining the Gunners today? The Chelsea midfielder seems to be Frank Lampard’s plans after playing on the weekend, but Chelsea are still in the market for West Ham’s Declan Rice, and if they were to pull off a deal for the former Blues youngster it could open an avenue for Arsenal to swoop.

Mikel Arteta is thought to be an admirer of Jorginho, who controls midfield in a similar way to Arteta in his playing days. But a deal is looking unlikely unless other pieces fall into place very quickly today.

Ask most Arsenal fans and they would tell you Houssem Aouar is top of their wishlist on deadline day, but any deal is getting more and more unlikely with every minute that passes.

Negotiations broke down last week as Lyon demanded £54m, a figure Arsenal believe they can only reach with the sale of at least one existing squad member. Yet most of the interest in their fringe players is in the shape of short-term loans, and unless a sizeable bid comes in for one of Mikel Arteta’s men it seems Aouar will be staying at Lyon this season. A pity, if so, as the 22-year-old would be great fun in the Premier League.

We start with Thomas Partey, and reports this morning that any potential deal is on a knife edge with Arsenal reluctant to meet Atletico Madrid’s £45m asking price which would activate the Ghanaian midfielder’s release clause.

However, one hope is that Lucas Torreira could be used as leverage for the deal. Atletico manager Diego Simeone is known to be a big admirer of his fellow Argentinian scrapper, and The Mirror reports Atletico are keen to close a deal for Torreira, ideally on a season-long loan. The Gunners want to sell in order to raise funds for Partey, but it remains to be seen whether the deadlock can be broken today. Watch this space.
