Arsenal transfer round-up: Gunners eye up Roma’s Kluivert and Chelsea’s Willian

Arsenal’s defeat to Tottenham in the North London Derby offered a wake-up call to manager Mikel Arteta, with concerns at both ends of the field as his team failed to get the better of a Spurs side which has looked so underwhelming of late.

It has long been reported that the Gunners will need to sell in order to buy, but we can’t rule out a summer of significant change at the Emirates Stadium as Arteta aims to turn a promising core into a healthier and leaner squad.

Here’s the latest from the back pages across the continent, as a former Ajax star reemerges as an option for the London club and another one-time target remains available after reportedly turning down a move out of Europe.

Gunners still keen on Kluivert

Earlier in the summer, there were suggestions Justin Kluivert might move to Arsenal as part of a deal which would see Henrikh Mkhitaryan join Roma permanently.

These never materialised, with Mkhitaryan instead moving to the Stadio Olimpico on a free, but this doesn’t necessarily mean the Kluivert switch is dead in the water.

According to Corriere dello Sport, via Sport Witness, Kluivert will still be available this summer for a fee in the region of €30m and the Gunners aren’t necessarily out of the race.

A big-money signing from Ajax in 2018, Kluivert has just five goals and seven assists across two Serie A seasons (per WhoScored), but is still just 21 years old and could still be an asset for the Premier League side.

Tierney “not going anywhere”

Mikel Arteta has insisted left-back Kieran Tierney is staying put, following suggestions Leicester City could move for the Scotland international if Ben Chilwell leaves the King Power Stadium.

Tierney has impressed since the Premier League’s resumption, having seen his start to life in north London hit by injury problems, prompting claims Brendan Rodgers – his former manager at Celtic – could swoop for the £25m defender.

However, Arteta quickly moved to shut down any talk of an exit, emphasising his fondness for Tierney.

“Everybody loves him at the club and he earns that every single day with the way he treats people, the way he works and the energy he brings to the place,” Arteta said, as reported by Goal.

“And then with his performances, I am delighted. He has adapted really well, he is a player that gives you everything in every session and every game. And the quality he has added as well.

After featuring just 11 times between August and March, the 23-year-old has started six of Arsenal’s last seven league games.

Willian still a possibility

Chelsea winger Willian has rejected a lucrative move to Major League Soccer, ensuring Arsenal’s chances of luring the Brazilian to the Emirates Stadium remain alive.

The former Anzhi and Shakhtar man, who is out of contract at Chelsea at the end of the season, had been offered a multi-year deal by MLS newcomers Inter Miami, according to the Telegraph.

However, Willian has reportedly turned down the David Beckham-owned franchise due to his desire to stay in Europe.

Inter Miami still have one remaining ‘designated player’ slot, allowing them to pay a marquee player a top wage, after adding Mexico international midfielder Rodolfo Pizarro and Argentine youngster Matias Pellegrini to their ranks.

Willian has been linked with both Arsenal and Tottenham, with the Gunners reportedly prepared to make him a big-money offer before recent months changed the financial situation of clubs across Europe.
