Arsenal’s FA Cup final victory could be huge for the club, and not just in terms of the glory of winning a trophy.
Qualification for the Europa League will boost the club’s coffers at a time where uncertainty reigns, and could be the difference between selling to buy and selling to buy well.
The Gunners may still offload some squad players, but things are potentially looking a little rosier, as the latest headlines from around Europe demonstrate.
Here’s what is being reported when it comes to this summer’s ins and outs ahead of Mikel Arteta’s first full season as Arsenal manager.
Matteo Guendouzi appears to be headed for the exit, but that doesn’t mean potential suitors will get a discount on the Frenchman.
The midfielder has not featured in a competitive match since Arsenal’s defeat to Brighton on 20 June, and was left out of the 20-man squad for Saturday’s FA Cup final.
However, according to the Times, the London club still want £40m for Guendouzi in a straight sale, with Juventus and Barcelona both reportedly interested in a summer swoop.
There have also been reports of the former Lorient man being used as part of an exchange deal which would take out-of-favour Barca man Philippe Coutinho to the Emirates Stadium.
The Express reports that Guendouzi wasn’t even present at Wembley, where Arsenal and Chelsea were both allowed up to 10 non-playing club members in attendance.
Mikel Arteta has been in contact with Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic, according to reports on the continent, after it emerged the World Cup finalist could be available on the cheap.
Rakitic, who won the Champions League with Barca in 2015, is understood to favour a Serie A move ahead of a Premier League switch.
However, according to Le10Sport, Arteta has called the €10m-rated midfielder in the hope of convincing him to move to north London.
The Croatian, who joined Barcelona from Sevilla back in 2014, only has one year left on his contract at Camp Nou.
He played his 200th league game for the Catalan club this season, and started the first leg of their to-be-completed Champions League last-16 tie against Napoli.
After seeing an initial bid of €20million knocked back, Arsenal are ready to return with a new offer for Sporting CP prospect Joelson Fernandes.
According to A Bola, via Sport Witness, the initial bid was knocked back “almost immediately” as the Portuguese side continue to hold out for a club to meet the teenager’s €45m release clause, but Arsenal are expected to test Sporting’s resolve.
Sporting fell well short of Champions League qualification, and will need to play two qualifying rounds to make it into the Europa League group stage.
They have already offloaded one player to the Premier League, with Matheus Pereira joining newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion after a successful loan spell.
Joelson scored five times for Sporting’s under-23s in the 2019/20 season, and played just over an hour of first-team football, spread across four substitute appearances.
