Arsenal’s Thomas Partey transfer stance as Lucas Torreira nears Atletico move

Arsenal are reportedly no longer pursuing a move for Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey with Houssem Aouar now the focus.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is keen to strengthen his midfield in the final days of the transfer window with the deadline on Monday night.

A move for Partey has been touted all summer though Lyon star Aouar is now believed to be Arteta’s top target.

Arsenal midfielder Lucas Torreira is set to join Atletico Madrid on loan but Partey is not expected to be part of any deal.

And the Emirates outfit are unlikely to be too worried about that with respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano explaining that Aouar is more of a target.

He said: “They want Aouar more than Thomas Partey at the moment. Thomas Partey has the release clause of €50million, and Atletico board are convinced the player will stay.

“They do not think Arsenal will come back for the player, they think Thomas wants to stay.

“It’s a different situation, also, because Lyon will not be playing Champions League football next season.

“In Ligue 1 you have PSG ready to fight to win the title, in La Liga they have a different situation because they will be playing Champions League football.

“Atletico have a good project, Partey is happy Atletico have signed players like Luis Suarez, so it’s different between the two players.

“That’s why I see Arsenal more concentrating on Aouar than Thomas Partey right now.”

Arteta has been tight-lipped on any transfers, saying earlier this week: “We don't have any news on new players and either with players that might leave the football club.

“It's a week to go, I think it's going to be really busy for other clubs because not much business has been done.

"Let's see what happens.”
