Arthur Melo’s mother has fired back at Quique Setien after the Barcelona boss criticised the outgoing midfielder, who is on the verge of joining Juventus.

The Spanish giants have agreed a deal that will see the Brazilian move to Turin while Miralem Pjanic will go in the other direction in an eyebrow-raising move.

Arthur arrived in Catalonia from Grêmio with high expectations in 2018, but has failed to make his mark at the Nou Camp, with fans somewhat disappointed with the midfielder’s output.

The Barcelona boss told reporters that Arthur’s move to Spain ‘didn’t bear fruit’ on Friday

And on Friday, Setien hit out at Arthur, saying that he has fallen flat at the club.

‘Arthur is neither the first player nor the last to sign for a club with high expectations that do not bear fruit,’ Setien told reporters.

‘Maybe he lacked a bit of continuity. It is not easy to change things that other coaches have told him were good, like holding the ball when we want to play two touches.’

Those comments have angered Arthur’s mother, who has taken to Twitter to slam the experienced coach.

His mother, Lucia, didn’t take kindly to the comments of her son’s coach at Barcelona

‘My God, now they will start finding flaws with the player,’ she posted.

The 23-year-old is set to feature for Setien’s side against Celta Vigo this weekend as a result of the injuries of Frenkie de Jong and Sergio Busquets, before then being allowed to travel to Turin.

Arthur has played 71 games for Barcelona, scoring four goals and providing six assists in those outings. This season, he has conjured up four goals and four assists in his 27 appearances.

His form since the LaLiga restart has been underwhelming, though, with Barca fans growing increasingly frustrated with his lack of spark.

Rumours from Spain had suggested that the deal to bring Pjanic to Barcelona had hit a snag, with Arthur initially refusing to accept moving to Juve, requiring the Spaniards to turn up the heat on the midfielder to leave the club.
