Chelsea boss Frank Lampard told to make two key signings after Arsenal loss

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard must bolster his back four and potentially sign a new goalkeeper in the transfer window, Blues hero Ashley Cole claims. Chelsea have already signed Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

Lampard is clearly keen to bolster his attack, with the Blues boss also closing in on Bayer Leverkusen’s Kai Havertz.

The German international is said to be keen to follow his countryman Werner to Stamford Bridge.

However, Chelsea hero Cole says Lampard must focus on defensive reinforcements in the transfer window.

He said: “Chelsea need to add – they need personalties and leaders. The goalkeeper, the defence…”

Kepa Arrizabalaga could be replaced this summer, with the goalkeeper out of favour under Lampard.

The Spaniard, who cost Chelsea £71m, was benched for their FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal on Saturday night.

Arrizabalaga was also axed for their final game of the Premier League season against Wolves.

Former Liverpool ace Jamie Carragher has been vocal on Chelsea’s transfer plans, with the pundit urging Lampard to bolster defensively.

“Chelsea won’t go any further unless they change their goalkeeper,” Carragher said.

“Going back to how important goalkeepers are, I look at this Chelsea team and there’s a lot I like about it, it does remind me in a lot of ways the position Jurgen Klopp was in a couple of years ago.

“He’s done as much as he can, yes Frank’s still in his early stages but those big signings can completely transform you as a team.

“I still think Chelsea need a defender, you see how many goals they’ve conceded. I think a lot of that is down to the goalkeeper being totally honest.

“You see a lot of centre halves at Chelsea without seeing one really outstanding one, those are the areas that if they are going to challenge Liverpool and Man City they’ll have to rectify in the summer.

“They are the worst team in the league defending corners. This is a massive problem for Chelsea.

“Yes [Timo] Werner is coming in and the lad from Ajax, there is talk of Havertz as well.

“It sounds great and it gets supporters excited but it means nothing if you don’t sort out that back three and certainly that goalkeeper.”
