Chelsea player ratings vs Tottenham: Jorginho stars as Werner nets first goal in defeat

Timo Werner scored his first Chelsea goal but Tottenham knocked the Blues out of the Carabao Cup at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The two sides went to penalties after a 1-1 draw in normal time but Mason Mount missed the final penalty to send Spurs into the fifth round of the competition.

German striker Werner capitalised on the error of Spurs debutant Sergio Reguilon to fire the Blues in front on 19 minutes.

And Chelsea were the better team for the rest of the first half but Spurs improved after the break.

Winger Erik Lamela equalised seven minutes from time to force a penalty shootout.

On spot-kicks, Mount was the only player to miss – firing wide off of the post – as Spurs won 5-4.

Express Sport rates and slates Frank Lampard’s players as they crashed out of the cup competition.

Chelsea player ratings vs Tottenham – Carabao Cup

Edouard Mendy – 6

Overly-eager to claim the odd cross but a rare solid performance by a Chelsea goalkeeper. Unable to save a penalty in the shootout.

Cesar Azpilicueta – 7

Seemed to enjoy the freedom he was given down the right, setting up Werner’s goal. Scored his penalty.

Kurt Zouma – 7

Strong and powerful when needed and one superb tackle from Fernandes in the first half.

Fikayo Tomori – 7

Great chance to add another chunk of experience against a team that started with no strikers.

Ben Chilwell – 6

First start in Chelsea colours and he was given a free ride up and down the left flank for an hour.

Jorginho – 8

Conducted affairs from the heart of the Chelsea team, directing play with all the time in the world. Scored his penalty.

Mateo Kovacic – 7

Turned over ball from Spurs far too easily to keep Chelsea dominant in possession.

Callum Hudson-Odoi – 6

Took the opportunity to showcase his talent with some great runs and dangerous crossed.

Mason Mount – 6

Seems indispensible for Lampard at the moment with another enthusiastic display but missed the decisive penalty.

Timo Werner – 7

Will be delighted with his first goal for Chelsea – could not have finished it any better.

Olivier Giroud – 5

Led the Chelsea line to great effect, allowing the real threat to build around him.
