Chelsea still expected to make multiple new signings before transfer window shuts

Chelsea are still set to make multiple new signings before the end of the summer window, according to transfer expert Ian McGarry. Chelsea have already brought in six players ahead of the start of next season. The Blues have spent over £200million as Frank Lampard looks to build on his impressive first campaign as head coach.

Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner were the first players through the door at Stamford Bridge for a combined fee of around £80m.

Chelsea then completed deals for left-back Ben Chilwell and Germany star Kai Havertz, as well as free transfers for defenders Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

But McGarry does not think the west London club have finished their spending yet.

Goalkeeper Edouard Mendy is in talks over a potential £18m move to Chelsea.

But McGarry says Mendy will not be alone, with West Ham star Declan Rice also a key target.

“I don’t think Chelsea’s spending has stopped, as simple as that,” McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“My understanding is that the cheque book is still open and there will be more signings to come in.

“Rice remains the No 1 target in terms of centre-half.

“Mendy is a compromise candidate but is someone who they think can pressure Kepa into returning to the level of form that they expect from him should he be put into the arena where he needs to prove himself.

“So yes, I do believe that Rice and market movement towards Chelsea will certainly be something that we see a lot more of in the next two to three weeks.”

Meanwhile, former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf believes Mendy would be a good signing for his old side.

“He’s a very good goalkeeper,” Leboeuf said on ESPN FC.

“I followed him when he was playing for Reims and he signed for Rennes after that. I know Petr Cech is very close to Rennes, playing two years there just before coming to Chelsea.

“I guess he has some people that he knows in the dressing room and at the club to know that Edouard Mendy is really a fantastic goalkeeper.

“I think he will serve better than Kepa Arrizabalaga did for the years he’s been at Chelsea and the amount of money Chelsea paid.

“Now the question mark will be what’s going to happen to Kepa if Mendy comes to Chelsea and plays in goal.”
