Chelsea told they are making a mistake letting Willian leave on free transfer

Chelsea have been told they will be making a mistake if they let Willian leave the club on a free transfer.

The Brazilian forward is nearing the end of his contract at Stamford Bridge and is not expected to sign an extension.

He has been at Chelsea since 2013, but The Blues' hierarchy are not willing to alter their strategy regarding players over 30 to meet his demands.

Willian has been requesting a three-year deal, and has no intention of agreeing the club's offer of two years.

Instead the 31-year-old looks set to leave for nothing in the summer, and Glen Johnson feels his old club could live to regret their decision.

"It would blow my mind if they just let him go for free," Johnson told Mirror Football . "You try to replace him nowadays you’re spending 40, 50, 60million.

"He’s been, other than [Christian] Pulisic, probably their best player."

Willian has certainly been in flying form since the restart, scoring four times in six appearances.

His form has helped the club push up to third in the table, but there is no sign of a fresh contract offer.

Not from Chelsea at least – but London rivals Tottenham and Arsenal are both said to be showing an interest in the player, with Willian also keen on staying in the UK capital.

Another player whose future at Chelsea remains uncertain is £50million midfielder Jorginho.

The Blues' vice-captain has barely featured since the season got back underway as Frank Lampard has opted for other options in his squad.

One suggestion put forward is that Jorginho does not fit in with his manager's style of play, and could be offloaded this summer amid interest from Juventus.

But Johnson feels Jorginho's lack of playing time does not necessarily mean Lampard wants to get shot of the 29-year-old.

"He’s a decent player, obviously Lamps know him better than I do," Johnson added. "These clubs have got big squads so not everyone can play so I wouldn’t assume he wants to get rid of him, he’s just rotating the squad and seeing what the other players can do."
