Chelsea transfer deal for Edouard Mendy ‘almost done’ with medical already complete

Chelsea are on the verge of competing the £18.5million signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes. The goalkeeper is understood to have already taken his medical having been given the green light to leave for London on Friday.

Rennes are in action this afternoon at Nimes in Ligue One and 36-year-old goalkeeper Romain Salin was given his chance between the sticks in place of Mendy.

Once the game is out of the way, Rennes will be handed the chance to complete all the formalities surrounding Mendy’s exit.

The club agreed a deal with Chelsea on Friday following a meeting in which Chelsea’s improved offer was discussed.

Mendy had made it clear he wanted to leave and move to Stamford Bridge, leaving Rennes with little choice but to sell.

Rennes president Nicolas Holveck made it clear during a press conference that he was willing to let the player go permitting there is an agreement with all parties.

That has now been reached and according to The Athletic’s Adam Leventhal, who claims the deal is now close.

He tweeted: ‘Told deal for keeper Edouard Mendy to move to Stamford Bridge is “almost done” from source at Rennes. Understand fee is €20m (+ €5m add-ons).’

The player already completed his medical on Friday upon arrival on England, according to Chelsea reporter Simon Phillips.

Chelsea have been the Premier League big spenders this summer and the club have one more addition on their radar after Mendy.

The Blues want to bring Declan Rice back to west London after releasing the West Ham star as a 14-year-old.

It won’t be easy though given the Hammers are set to demand up to £70million for the England international.

In Mendy though, Frank Lampard has solved one of his transfer priorities heading into the transfer window.

After the 3-2 defeat to West Ham last season, he decided he wanted to sign a new goalkeeper following the inconsistency of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Jan Oblak was a target but they were always unlikely to land the Atletico Madrid No 1.

There were talks with Andre Onana too over a transfer from Ajax, following good relations between the two clubs from the deal which saw Hakim Ziyech move to Chelsea.

In the end though, Chelsea opted for Mendy and director Petr Cech is thought to be a key figure behind the deal.

The former Blues goalkeeper was entrusted with finding Lampard some competition for Kepa and Willy Caballero.

The Spaniard is said to have reacted positively to the club’s interest in Mendy.

He wants to fight for his future and is not prepared to walk away from the club just yet, just two seasons after his £71million arrival from Athletic Club.
