After arriving under a transfer embargo, Frank Lampard has taken little time to retool his Chelsea squad this summer, spending lavishly at several key positions.
First, Hakim Ziyech arrived as a tricky, speedy winger. He will play opposite of Christian Pulisic, who ended the season in sensational form.
Then a deal for Timo Werner was completed. The German was the second-highest scorer in the Bundesliga last season and can play out wide or through the middle. He will bring a clinical, prolific nature to Chelsea’s attacking play.
And now the Blues are pressing on with other deals. They are close to signing Ben Chilwell and are pushing hard to sign Kai Havertz, too. We have an update on the latter move. Meanwhile, defensive and goalkeeping reinforcements are possible, with a host of departures expected too.
Here is the latest that is going on in the crazy transfer world at Stamford Bridge.
After their Champions League humiliation at the hands of Bayern Munich, Barcelona are entering a rebuilding stage. That has led to swirling rumours that Lionel Messi will look to leave the Nou Camp, frustrated with the club for not providing him with a squad capable of winning the Champions League.
With few clubs able to attract Messi and afford both his price tag and wages, there are suggestions that Chelsea could be lured into making a move for one of the greatest players of all time.
Sport via Sports Mole report that Frank Lampard and Chelsea are keeping a close eye on developments as Messi is reported to have told new Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman that he wants to leave.
Inter Milan and Manchester City were also named as potential landing spots, but Barcelona are said to accept nothing less than his £631million release clause.
After weeks of lengthy discussions regarding Kai Havert’s potential move to Stamford Bridge, Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen are reported to be close to a breakthrough.
The two clubs were negotiating the German’s price, with Leverkusen reportedly holding out for £80 million. Chelsea are now said to be able to meet this figure thanks to a series of add-ons and clauses inserted into the deal. Per football.london, this gets the two teams much closer to a potential final deal.
Having already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech this summer, Lampard remains keen to add elite offensive talent to his squad, which Havertz unquestionably is, despite only having turned 21 earlier this summer.
The attacking midfielder has been one of the standout young players in the Bundesliga in the past two seasons, scoring 17 and 12 goals respectively. Lengthy discussions have dragged on, but it now seems that progress is coming.
After spending two seasons out on loan at AC Milan and Monaco respectively, Tiemoue Bakayoko is expected to secure a third loan season soon.
The Chelsea midfielder, who spent just one season with the team after a £40m move in 2017, impressed in his two loan spells and is now reportedly set to return to the San Siro this summer.
Fabrizio Romano reports that “AC Milan are getting closer” to a deal, stating that it would be another loan deal with an option to buy next summer.
With N'Golo Kante, Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic and Billy Gilmour all capable of playing in a deeper central midfield position, Frank Lampard has options that he used extensively last season. Following two years away from the Chelsea set-up, Bakayoko’s exit is not surprising.
