Bayern Munich defender David Alaba would be the ‘best option’ to fix Liverpool’s defensive issues in the short term, says former Reds midfielder Danny Murphy.
Injuries to Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho have left Jurgen Klopp with limited choices at the heart of his backline.
Youngsters Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have had to fill in at centre-back, while Joel Matip returned to fitness to start in Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Manchester City.
Gabriel Jesus’ goal at the Etihad Stadium was the 16th Liverpool have conceded in their first eight Premier League games this season.
Meanwhile, the Reds are one of a number of clubs that have been linked with Alaba, whose contract at Bayern expires at the end of the season.
And Murphy believes the versatile Austrian international would be the perfect option to provide a quick fix for Liverpool’s injury-hit defence.
‘In terms of his ability, he absolutely fits, he’s a super player’, Murphy told Stadium Astro.
‘I suppose what you’d have to be looking at from Klopp’s perspective is the balance of the squad moving forward when everyone is fit.
‘Or you just look short-term and get the best option in possible which would be him.
‘I would be wanting to do it personally. You can’t have enough good players, but I think there would be a lot of competition.
‘He would certainly add quality and strength in depth, but there will a lot of takers for Alaba.’
