Chelsea transfer target Edouard Mendy "deserves" a summer move because he is a “great goalkeeper”, says Rennes captain Damien Da Silva.
The Blues are thought to be close to signing the 28-year-old goalkeeper with a £25million bid currently on the table.
Mendy is highly rated in France after he helped Rennes to a third place finish in Ligue 1 last term, and Frank Lampard is a fan.
He is keen to sign another stopper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga for the No. 1 jersey after the Spaniard’s poor recent form.
Indeed, the £72m signing lost his place to veteran 'keeper Willy Cabellero post-lockdown after several sub-standard performances.
And Mendy has been tipped to seal a move this summer by his Rennes team-mate Da Silva, who told Telefoot on Tuesday: “We are a little selfish, we don’t want to lose Edouard Mendy.
"But it’s part of football and the transfer market. He’s a great goalkeeper who deserves what happens to him.”
Rennes only signed Mendy last summer for £3.5m from Stade Reims and would be set for a massive profit if they sold him only a year later.
Chelsea will be hoping to seal the transfer before their Premier League opener at Brighton on Monday.
When asked about the efforts to sign Mendy on Thursday, Lampard replied: “It’s a situation I don’t want to be drawn on.
“Mendy is a Rennes player, so it’s a non-starter for me to talk about.”
The Frenchman would become Chelsea’s seventh new arrival this summer after Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.
Much is expected of the Blues next season after the huge spending spree with some even tipping them to challenge for the Premier League title.
Lampard led the west London side to a fourth place finish last term, sealing their return to the Champions League.
