Emmanuel Adebayor played secret role in Arsenal securing Thomas Partey transfer

Former Arsenal forward Emmanuel Adebayor has revealed the role he had in making sure Thomas Partey signed for the Gunners this season.

The midfielder was brought in from Atletico Madrid on transfer deadline day, activating his £45m release clause.

And he has hit the ground running at Mikel Arteta’s side, only missing two Europa League games this season.

The Gunners were reportedly tracking him throughout the summer, holding lengthy talks with the Spanish side before making their move.

But Adebayor, who scored 62 goals in more than 140 appearances under Arsene Wenger, admitted his role in making sure the midfielder moved to Arsenal.

Speaking to reporters in Ghana, the 36-year-old said: “About six months to a year ago, he was telling me about contacts he had had from England. He mentioned Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea.

“And I told him, 'Listen, if I have a chance to play in England, a chance to play for Arsenal, the place you to have go to is Arsenal'.

“Because he is young, he is still learning and Arsenal are a family club, and I'm very happy and impressed with his first steps in the team.

“Unfortunately we all saw what happened against Aston Villa at home but he is a great player, a great personality.

“He is like a younger brother to me who is always looking for advice and we get along very well.”

And the former Gunners star revealed how he helped Partey even after the deal was complete.

“When I went to Arsenal, I didn't have anybody to tell me what to do or where to go,” the forward added.

“I even told him the area where to stay, where he can find a beautiful and calm house. Because you need to be calm to play better on the pitch.”

Partey did leave Arsenal fans concerned after picking up a knock in the 3-0 defeat to Aston Villa before the international break.

But insiders at the north London side have given a positive update on the Ghanaian’s fitness.
