Gary Neville admits excitement at Thiago to Liverpool transfer despite Man Utd competition

Gary Neville has revealed that the prospect of Thiago joining Liverpool excites him, despite there being interest from Manchester United. The Spaniard could end up at Anfield come the end of the transfer window and links with the Reds will not go away.

Bayern Munich have allowed the star an extra week off to focus on his future.

The club are willing to offload him this summer given that he has just nine months left on his contract.

Thiago will be allowed to leave if Bayern’s £25million valuation is met.

Liverpool have yet to table an official offer and are reportedly stalling due to the fact they can sign Thiago on a free transfer from January.

He would bring a wealth of experience to Liverpool’s Premier League-winning dressing room while his quality is there for all to see.

United legend Neville thinks the player would be the perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp.

“The one that I think that scarily would excite me the most is Thiago to Liverpool,” Neville said.

“I think Liverpool need that player because the team’s been so good, the coach has been so good it would feel like if they didn’t sign someone at this point, the players in that dressing room would probably want that challenge of a new player coming in. He’s such a brilliant player. Liverpool need him.

“He would be an outstanding player.”

Liverpool have brought in just one new face ahead of the new Premier League campaign in the form of Kostas Tsimikas.

Supporters are beginning to raise concerns about the club’s lack of spending.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are striving to put the pressure on at the top having secured a number of marquee additions including Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech, Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell.

Neville struggles to see how Liverpool can maintain the same level of performance across such a long period of time, without an injection of quality.

He added: “It wouldn’t be ridiculous to suggest there would be a slight drop off, if they don’t somehow stimulate that squad by doing something.

“To get to a Champions League final, then to get to a Champions League final and win, and then to go again with the Premier League is a huge emotional drain on the group of players for three years. It’s a huge emotional demand. To ask them to go again and achieve that same standard would be a super-human effort.

“That is not me being clever, getting them to do the same without amendment to the squad to give them that lift again, that is where signing Thiago would give be a big one for Liverpool.

“Him or someone like him would help them maintain their level. They need that impetus to stay where they are. I could be wrong – they could deliver exactly what they did before but looking at history it doesn’t work like that usually.”
