Jamie Carragher has changed his ming on Arsenal’s top-four chances – despite suffering their first loss of the season to Liverpool.
The former defender saw his side end the Gunners’ 100 per-cent start to the Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win.
It saw Mikel Arteta’s side drop out of the top four with his first loss in three games against the Reds for 2020.
But the Sky Sports pundit suggested the north London side’s performance shows signs of vast improvement for the future.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the Gunners’ Anfield loss, Carragher said: “It was difficult for them tonight – they stayed in the game, which was important, and had a big chance.
“But Liverpool are a few years down the line. It’s a completely different remit for Arteta.
“I think it’s almost an identical job to what Klopp came into.
“He came into a job where they weren’t even qualifying for the Champions League.
“That’s what Arsenal have been failing to do before Mikel Arteta’s arrival. The first thing for them is to get back into the Champions League.
“That was the big thing Klopp did in his first season. Can Arsenal do that? I think there’s a good chance that Arsenal can.
“I didn’t think they could before the start of the season. I know it’s early but I like a lot of what Mikel Arteta is doing.”
The Spaniard has now recorded a 60 per-cent win rate with the Gunners, getting 20 victories from 33 wins.
And the pundit believes that the manager could be the deciding factor in reaching the top four this season.
Carragher added: “I don’t think it’s possible for him as a manager to get any more out of the group of players he’s got.
“I don’t think it’s a top-four group but I think the way he’s organising them and what he’s doing could get them into the top four.
“I go back to where Arsenal were when they came in and could they win a title in four or five years? It’s still very difficult.
“But I think they’ve got a really good manager who wouldn’t be getting anymore out of that Arsenal team.”
It comes days after the pundit had been doubting the Gunners’ chances of a Champions League spot this year.
“I don’t think too many people had them in the top-four predictions before the start of the season, I know I certainly didn’t,” Carragher told the Pitch to Post preview show.
“I know it's early days, but you look at the way other teams have performed in the early weeks and I think they'll be a much stronger proposition for the Champions League places than we initially thought.
"[Arsenal's fixtures] are tough games on paper but you can be sure they'll be tough for the opposition now, whereas in the past people maybe thought with Arsenal you can bully them and maybe roll them over in certain games. They are a lot stronger proposition now under Mikel Arteta."
