Joe Gomez has suffered a potentially serious injury in England training to deepen Liverpool’s injury crisis in defence. Liverpool are already without Virgil van Dijk for the remainder of the season due to the anterior cruciate knee ligament injury he suffered last month. Fabinho is on his way back from a hamstring problem but his preferred role is in defensive midfield.
Joel Matip has only played five Premier League games in the last 12 months so cannot be relied upon as a constant in Jurgen Klopp’s back line.
Rhys Williams has impressed in the Champions League but the 19-year-old is yet to play in the Premier League and it would be a huge step up from playing in the National League North at Kidderminster last season.

Meanwhile, Nat Phillips impressed on his league debut against West Ham but is another option with a lack of experience at the top level.
Express Sport have therefore picked three defenders Liverpool could target in the January transfer window.
JUST IN: Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer furious because of new development
Schalke defender Ozan Kabak has been linked with a move to Anfield in recent months.
The 20-year-old has made just three Bundesliga appearances so far this season, partly due to being suspended after being sent off in the 3-1 loss to Werder Bremen in September.
Reports in October claimed Liverpool had opened talks with Schalke over signing Kabak in the winter window.
And Italian outlet Calcio Mercato claim the Turkey international could be available for around €25million (£22.8m).
However, Kabak’s relatively small experience at the top level may not make him Liverpool’s prime target.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been reportedly interested in RB Leipzig star Upamecano.
The 22-year-old has established himself as one of the most exciting central defenders in Europe in the last two seasons.
Upamecano’s release clause is reportedly as low as £38m but that does not come into effect until the summer of 2021.
Therefore Liverpool may have to pay slightly more to prise him away from Leipzig midway through this season.
By far the most experienced out of the three, Alaba is another defender Liverpool have been linked with.
The Austria international has transformed into one of the top centre-backs around after starting his career primarily as a left-back.
Alaba is out of contract at the end of the season and therefore can speak to clubs in January regarding a free transfer.
But Liverpool want a deal in January, with Football Insider claiming an agreement could be struck for £30m.
