The reason for Liverpool’s lack of transfer business this summer can be explained by some of Jurgen Klopp’s comments from last season.
Greek left-back Konstantinos Tsimikas has been Klopp’s only addition this summer, arriving for £11m from Olympiacos.
Liverpool are also understood to be looking to secure a deal for Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago Alcantara, while Watford’s Ismaila Sarr is thought to be on the club’s radar.
All in all, there have been very few changes to the side that waltzed to the Premier League title last season.
And Klopp’s comments from the end of the 2019/20 term show that he wants to keep his squad as minimal as possible in order to keep everyone happy and ready to play their part.
“The solution cannot be to have a much bigger squad for the specific moment and then realise you cannot use all the players,” said the German a couple of months ago.
“These players can only play the football they play because they know they are needed.
“They are all human beings and nobody can be held back for a year and then on the last day of the year be told, ‘Now we need you.’
“We cannot keep someone in the backyard and bring them up in the decisive moment. That will not help. We will have solutions for that, we have young players.
“The size of the squad is not that important to me, the quality of the squad is very much so.”
There could still be departures at Liverpool this summer though.
