Leeds owner Radrizzani’s cash injections lay bare club’s financial concerns

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani paid £1.5million out of his pocket every month last season to keep the club afloat.

Radrizzani has been criticised by some Leeds fans for not spending enough on players during his three years in full control at Elland Road.

Managing director Angus Kinnear claims Radrizzani’s spending was capped by the EFL’s rules and that he personally paid the club £1.5million each month last season to help them pay their bills.

“The dialogue on the internet is about Andrea not being able to invest in the team, even to the extent he was stealing from the club to line his own pockets,” Kinnear said in an interview in the second series of Amazon Prime’s Take Us Home.

“The reality is Andrea can’t put any more money in. The profit and sustainability rules mean that however much money he has to put into the club, he can’t spend.

“The other reality is Andrea was putting his hand into his pocket month after month.

“At the end of every month last season, I had to write him an email and I have to request pretty much £1.5million to keep the club running.

“And every month he says yes. That’s a measure of his commitment.”

Kinnear also revealed during football’s lockdown how hard the club was being hit.

He says he keenly felt the pressure of trying to retain all the club’s staff as their income plummeted.

Marcelo Bielsa, his players and staff agreed to a wage deferral on the condition that the money would be used to keep the club’s 200 non-playing employees in work.

“The lion’s share of our revenue comes from match income and we’ve lost five home games, they’re over a million pounds each,” he said in an interview during lockdown.

“So we’re under acute financial pressure.

“We have 250 staff, it goes up to 2,000 on a match day and those people rely on Leeds United.

“I wake up with that pressure and responsibility.”

Take Us Home launches on Amazon Prime on Thursday.
