Lionel Messi has set another new record with Barcelona as he has overtaken Xavi become the player with the most assists in a single La Liga season.
Xavi has held the record since the 2008-09 campaign as the former Barcelona midfielder registered 20 assists that season.
Messi equalled that tally by setting up Arturo Vidal’s goal in Barca’s 1-0 win over Real Valladolid last week.
And the Argentine broke Xavi’s total in Barcelona’s final game of their La Liga campaign against Alaves as he provided the pass for Ansu Fati’s opening goal.
Messi then scored his 24th goal of the La Liga campaign to make it 2-0 before Luiz Suarez added a third.
Messi is now three goals clear of Karim Benzema in the race for La Liga’s Pichichi trophy.
Benzema, who is expected to start against Leganes in Real Madrid’s final La Liga match on Sunday evening, has never won the award for the division’s highest goalscorer.
If Benzema fails to overhaul Messi, it will be the Argentine’s seventh Pichichi trophy of his career, which will be another new record.
