Lionel Messi sends message to Diego Maradona after his brain surgery

Lionel Messi has passed on his best wishes to Diego Maradona and told the Argentinian icon he wants to see him return to full health again as soon as possible after doctors discovered a blood clot in his brain.

The 60-year-old was admitted to the Ipensa hospital in La Plata, Argentina on Monday, suffering from anaemia and dehydration, and was subsequently taken to the Olivos clinic in Buenos Aries where he underwent brain surgery.

Maradona’s neurosurgeon and personal physician, Leopoldo Luque, has since confirmed that surgery was necessary after a subdural hematoma was revealed by a CT scan.

The ex-Barcelona and Napoli forward – widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all-time – responded well to the operation and doctors will be closely observing his health over the coming weeks and months.

‘I was able to evacuate the hematoma successfully and Diego tolerated the surgery very well,’ Luque said.

‘The steps now are observation, but it is controlled.

‘It will depend on how he does. It is not highly complex, but it is still brain surgery.’

Responding to the news, Argentina and Barca superstar Messi posted on Instagram: ‘Diego, all the strength in the world.

‘My family and I would love to see you healthy as soon as possible.

‘A hug from the heart!’

Maradona was last seen in public on on his 60th birthday ahead of Patronato’s clash with Gimnasia de La Plata, the team he has managed since September 2019.

The 1986 World Cup winner had a number of health issues over the last two decades and underwent surgery last January after a hernia caused internal bleeding in his stomach.
