Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp’s verdict on Edinson Cavani ahead of Man Utd move

Manchester United are on the verge of snapping up former Paris St-Germain striker Edinson Cavani on a free transfer – a player Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp rates very highly.

Reports suggest the Red Devils have agreed to pay Cavani a staggering £20million in wages, despite being fearful of making the same mistake they made with expensive flop Alexis Sanchez.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been without a recognised centre-forward since Romelu Lukaku left to join Inter Milan last year, meaning he has instead been forced to deploy Anthony Martial at the pinpoint of his attack.

Now he looks to have secured a short-term replacement for Lukaku in Cavani, who departed PSG upon the expiry of his contract this summer.

The 33-year-old has also been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, with Diego Simeone reportedly eyeing him up as a potential recruit back in January.

When those reports first emerged, Liverpool were gearing up for a crucial showdown with Atletico in the Champions League last-16 and Klopp admitted he didn’t want their opponents to sign him.

The Reds manager said at the time: “I think that [Alvaro] Morata and [Joao] Felix are already dangerous enough.

“They have enough good strikers so I hope they don’t sign Cavani.

“But I heard that Thomas Tuchel said he needs him as well. I haven’t really started analysing Atletico, I watched them a lot but not on an analysis basis.

“We will do that and we will see if we will have to involve Cavani or not.”

Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 appearances for PSG, winning six Ligue 1 titles in his time at the Parc des Princes.

The marksman also bagged 104 goals in 138 games for Napoli before making the switch to Paris.

He will rake in an eye-watering £200,000 per week at Old Trafford, which proved too expensive for other potential suitors Atletico and Benfica.
