Liverpool fan loses out on huge Jesse Lingard bet after Man Utd beat Leicester

A Liverpool supporter has missed out on a decent sum after Jesse Lingard ruined his season-long bet with a late goal in Manchester United’s victory over Leicester City on the final day of the Premier League season.

At the start of the season, Antony Johnson took a 40/1 punt on Lingard failing to score or register an assist for the entire Premier League campaign.

Lingard has struggled to make an impact for United all season and although he has managed to score in the Europa League and the FA Cup, the 27-year-old had failed to register a goal or an assist in the Premier League with just one game to go.

Johnson appeared to be on course to receive a £132 payout following his £3.30 gamble heading into the final day of the Premier League season.

But Lingard had other ideas as he came on as a late substitute against Leicester City and pounced on Kasper Schmeichel’s error to seal United’s 2-0 victory in the 97th minute.

Following Lingard’s first goal of the Premier League season, Johnson posted on Twitter: ‘Should never have doubted the true king. Top trolling by Jesse Lingard.’

United, meanwhile, secured Champions League qualification with their 2-0 win over Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has secured United’s highest finish since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

‘I’m delighted,’ Solskjaer said of United’s third-placed finish.

‘We’ve achieved a Champions League spot, we’ve come from way, way behind teams and gone past them.

‘We’ve shown that we’ve got the consistency, the right mentality. We’re building a group and a performance culture here that we can be proud of.

‘I told the boys that no matter what happened today, we’ve won. The players have shown their qualities as a group.

‘They’ve taken on board what we want and they’re looking more and more like a Manchester United team on the pitch. The environment there is so much better than it was before.’
