Liverpool fans slam Man City’s guard of honour for Premier League champions

Liverpool fans were fuming at Manchester City's guard of honour for the newly crowned Premier League champions, branding it 'disrespectful'.

Tradition dictated that Pep Guardiola's deposed title winners had to pay tribute to the new top-flight kings when Liverpool visited the Etihad on Thursday night.

Jurgen Klopp's side won their 19th title – and first for 30 years – when City's defeat to Chelsea last week left Liverpool's whopping lead insurmountable.

City gained a modicum of revenge with a 4-0 victory over Liverpool at the Etihad on Thursday night, which reduced the Reds' advantage at the top of the Premier League to a mere 20 points with six games to go.

However, before the game even kicked off, Liverpool fans were left furious at what one fan called "the worst guard of honour I've ever seen".

Some City players stopped clapping before every Liverpool player had emerged from the tunnel, while some left the lines before the entire team had walked through.

And some Liverpool supporters thought their team hadn't been shown the respect they deserved following a dominant campaign in which Klopp's men have won 28 of their 32 Premier League games so far.

Guardiola was quick to show his respect for Liverpool after a game in which his side were 3-0 up by half-time.

The City boss said: “I think they drunk a lot of beer the last week, but they were here with no beer in their blood and to win this game.

“I saw a team with incredible focus, with energy and a desire to win the game, and I saw from the first minute they were focused to play hard."

Kevin de Bruyne gave City the lead from the spot on 25 minutes after Raheem Sterling had been hauled down by Joe Gomez.

Sterling doubled the lead himself 10 minutes later, before De Bruyne set up Phil Foden on the strole of half-time.

Sterling thought he had a second midway through the second period, only for his effort to be turned into his own net by substitute Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to complete the rout.
