Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp pays touching tribute to Reds legend Ray Clemence

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has paid tribute to Reds legend Ray Clemence, who has passed away aged 72. Clemence spent 13 seasons at Liverpool, helping them win five league titles, three European Cups and three UEFA Cups.

Clemence eventually left Liverpool for Tottenham in 1981 and retired from playing after seven seasons in north London.

Klopp is among those to have paid tribute to Clemence, with the Liverpool boss calling him “one of the reasons our club is such a special one all these years later”.

He said: “This is an extremely sad moment for everyone associated with Liverpool FC and we, as the current team and management, send all our love to the family.

“We should never forget it is great players who make great teams and clubs.

“You only need to listen to the legends of LFC from his era to understand his significance.

“They say it better than I ever could, that Ray Clemence is one of the reasons our club is such a special one all these years later.

“He was one of the foundation stones that so much of this club’s success was built on.

“Our feeling in this moment is of course overwhelmingly sadness, but it is also appreciation.

A statement on behalf of Clemence’s family read: “With great sadness, we write to let you know that Ray Clemence passed away peacefully today, surrounded by his loving family.

“After fighting so hard, for such a long time, he’s now at peace and in no more pain.

“The family would like to say a huge thank you, for all the love and support that he’s received over the years.

“He was loved so much by us all and he will never be forgotten.”
