Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara tests positive for coronavirus

Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for coronavirus.

The 29-year-old, who joined Liverpool from Bayern Munich earlier in the month, has exhibited ‘minor symptoms’ of the virus but is in ‘good health’, the Premier League club have said.

Thiago missed Liverpool’s 3-1 Premier League victory over Arsenal on Monday evening through injury.

Liverpool said in a statement: ‘Thiago has tested positive for COVID-19 and is currently self-isolating according to the necessary guidelines.

‘The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to COVID-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time.’

Liverpool first-team doctor, Jim Moxon, added: ‘It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a COVID-19 test.

‘We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is OK. He will be self-isolating now as per the guidelines and hopefully he’ll be back with us soon.’

Thiago, who has won seven Bundesliga titles, two La Liga titles and the Champions League twice during his brilliant career, made his Liverpool debut in the 2-0 victory over Chelsea last week.

He missed Monday’s clash against Arsenal, however, and Jurgen Klopp confirmed he would also miss the next two games due to an unspecified injury.

‘After the international break, he will be fine – for sure,’ the Liverpool manager said. ‘That’s the situation at the moment, he’s not fit enough to be involved.’

More than 1,000,000 people have died from coronavirus worldwide, less than 12 months since the disease began to spread across the globe.

On Tuesday, the UK recorded another 7,143 Covid-19 cases, with a further 71 people dying with the virus.
