Liverpool tipped to drop second midfielder in at centre-back after Fabinho injury

Liverpool have been tipped to drop Jordan Henderson in at centre-back if required, to combat their defensive crisis. The Reds are down to just one fit senior option in the form of Joe Gomez, who has had his fair share of fitness problems in the past few seasons.

Now he is faced with the pressure of helping Liverpool weather the storm until at least January, when Jurgen Klopp has the option of signing reinforcements.

Virgil van Dijk is expected to miss the full season as he undergoes knee surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament.

Makeshift centre-back Fabinho hobbled off in the 2-0 win over FC Midtjylland at Anfield on Tuesday night.

Joel Matip has failed to prove his fitness following the dramatic Merseyside derby draw at Everton and now former Reds defender Steve Nicol believes Klopp may need to drop Henderson in at centre-back.

“We’ve got one centre-back, Joe Gomez who right now is going to be the guy in charge,” Nicol told ESPN FC.

“He’s going to have to be the one sweeping everything up, regardless of if they play two or three [at the back].

“I don’t really see how they could play three, I think they are just going to have to go with the young kid Williams and hope Gomez is mature enough to talk him through it.

“Henderson could probably drop in but again, Gomez would have to talk him through it.

“Fabinho has played centre-back in his Monaco days so he’s experienced in that position, where as Henderson is not.

“If you’re just going to pull someone out of midfield then you have to do it in a back four.”

It’s a position that Henderson has played for the Premier League champions less than a year ago, at the Club World Cup in Qatar.

He lined up alongside Gomez in a back four against Mexican outfit Monterrey.

Liverpool went on to win the match 2-1, courtesy of a stoppage-time winner from Roberto Firmino.

After the match, Henderson paid tribute to the players around him for making the adaptation easier.

That was different,” Henderson joked. “I had fantastic players around me, and they helped me out. It was different to anything that I have been used to. I’ve played at full-back, but I’ve never played there before.

“I just tried to do my best for the team and thankfully we got the win.”
