Liverpool are Premier League champions, but Jurgen Klopp still seems intent on improving his squad ahead of the 2020/21 season.
The Reds have been linked with a number of targets, although there is an element of the unknown over how much money they will have to spend after deciding not to move for Timo Werner, having tracked him all season.
Some say Klopp should look to sign an elite level centre-back to partner Virgil van Dijk, while others look at the midfield as an area that could use improving.
What is certain is that Liverpool will continue to be linked with players over the summer. Here are three of today’s biggest and most intriguing transfer stories involving the Anfield club.
Thiago Alcantara sparked endless speculation over his future after reportedly breaking off talks over a new contract at Bayern Munich, with the Spanish midfielder said to be keen on a move to Liverpool.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims Thiago “would like” a summer switch to the recently crowned Premier League champions, but underlined that talks between the parties involved are not at an advanced stage.
The failed pursuit of Werner has raised questions over what Liverpool’s transfer budget will be this summer, but Thiago could be allowed to leave the Allianz Arena for £30million.
Liverpool were among those, along with Everton and Wolves, reported to be interested in Hwang Hee-Chan, but the Red Bull Salzburg has now completed a £9m move to RB Leipzig.
Sky reported last month the Anfield club were monitoring the attacker ahead of a potential summer
move, with Klopp keen to add to his final third options ahead of the start of the new season.
But the close association between Salzburg and RB Leipzig proved to be a deciding factor, with the Bundesliga outfit having confirmed the signing of the South Korea international.
“In Hee-chan Hwang we have signed a player who fits the profile of what we are looking for,” said
RB Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche.
Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Kalidou Koulibaly in recent weeks, but Newcastle United have identified the Napoli centre-back as their ideal signing for the summer transfer window, according to reports.
Foot Mercato claims the Magpies see the Senegalese defender as a potential cornerstone to their side as financier Amanda Staveley looks to complete a takeover of the St James’ Park club with backing from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
Napoli have made clear they won’t let Koulibaly leave on the cheap this summer, and club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has slapped a £90m price tag on his prize asset with a number of suitors believed to be circling.
While the takeover of Newcastle has yet to be given the green light by the Premier League, the new owners are already planning transfers ahead of next season and view the signing of Koulibaly as a priority.
