Liverpool’s acquisition of ex-Man Utd staff member proving to be a shrewd move

Liverpool can close the financial gap on Manchester United even further, with a former Old Trafford staff member laying the groundwork.

That’s according to football finance expert Kieran Maguire, who believes that the Reds are in a “very strong position” off the pitch due to their stunning success on it.

In the latest accounts for both clubs, Liverpool trail United by £85million in terms of revenue – not accounting for their Champions League and Premier League successes in the last two seasons.

But it’s the arrival of former United head of global sponsorship and sales, Matt Scammell, that Maguire thinks will prove to be a shrewd one.

Scammell spent almost a decade with the Red Devils, but was announced last month as the new commercial director at Anfield.

In the role, Scammell will focus on growing partnership opportunities for the Premier League champions, as well as joining the executive team under owners FSG.

Speaking to the ECHO’s Blood Red podcast, Maguire outlined just how vital not only Scammell will be – but also how important Jurgen Klopp’s on-field success will be on the commercial side.

He said: "Manchester United have commercial income of around about £275 million per year.

"Liverpool’s has trebled from £62 million at the start of the decade to £188 million at the end so this is clearly an area where Liverpool have realised there is an opportunity.

"One of the ways to do that is to win trophies because that is what sponsors are willing to pay for, and what people hosting exhibition matches are willing to pay for.

"Let’s park COVID – Liverpool are therefore in a very strong position this summer given all the trophies that they have won to have had a successful pre-season tour.

"Companies want their brand next to the Premier League trophy – there are reputational benefits for all concerned – and people are prepared to pay a price for that.

He added: "Liverpool’s strategy of recruiting Matt Scammell is a logical one because they want to narrow that gap still further – it’s £175 million compared to £275 million so there is still some way to go.

"Manchester United and Liverpool are both global clubs and have worldwide fan bases and sponsors. If Liverpool follow the Manchester United model, that has proven to be very lucrative."

By increasing revenue streams, FSG have made Liverpool financially sutainable in recent years – meaning that money can be used for improving Klopp’s playing squad as they look to retain their Premier League crown.
