Luis Suarez’s final threat to Barcelona before Atletico Madrid transfer

Luis Suarez threatened to publicly release emails from Barcelona reportedly listing the teams he was forbidden from joining prior to sealing his transfer to Atletico Madrid.

The Uruguayan is set to complete his move to Barca's La Liga rivals on Thursday in a deal worth €6million (£5.5m).

But Suarez was almost forced to take drastic action to force through his transfer as Barcelona initially refused to sanction the switch.

According to Mundo Deportivo , Barcelona had sent Suarez an email detailing the clubs he was not allowed to sign for on a free.

The Spanish giants were keen to get the 33-year-old off their wage bill and Juventus looked to be his likely destination until a deal fell through.

That opened up a potential move to Atletico, but when Barca blocked the transfer, Suarez wanted to publish the private emails to show they were not one of the clubs included on the list.

Barcelona made it clear they were not going to strengthen a direct rival for free, but talks quickly came to a conclusion after Suarez issued the threat on Tuesday night.

Teams believed to have been included on the list were the likes of Man City, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid.

Suarez's time at the Nou Camp has come to an abrupt end after being told he would be allowed to leave following Barca's disastrous 8-2 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich.

The forward would have been entitled to another year on his contract if he were to play at least 60 per cent of Barca's matches in the 2020/21 season, which is believed to be the main driver behind the club forcing his exit.

His proposed move to Juventus collapsed after he was unable to obtain an Italian passport in time for the transfer to go through before deadline day.

Atletico moved quickly to land Suarez on a two-year deal, and the forward was seen in tears leaving Barca's training ground for the final time.

Barcelona will now hold a special press conference on Thursday honouring Suarez, who ends his time with the club as their third top scorer of all time.
