Man Utd boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could rectify defining David Moyes transfer mistake

Seven years down the line, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be about to make amends for one of David Moyes’ biggest blunders as manager of Manchester United. Back in 2013 after taking over from Sir Alex Ferguson, Moyes was assigned the immediate task of rearranging a depleted yet title-winning United squad.

It was the end of an era and with many stars beginning to plateau, Moyes had to show his ruthless streak in the transfer market.

The former Everton boss got several calls horribly wrong though including his judgement on Thiago.

At the time, the Spaniard was set to leave Barcelona and had a number of European giants flocking for his signature.

He was emerging as one of the finest midfield talents in world football, but he was struggling for minutes behind Sergio Busquets, Xavi Hernandez and Andres Iniesta.

That’s when United first emerged onto the scene with Thiago keen on making the move to Old Trafford.

Guillem Balague claims that Thiago asked his agent and Pep Guardiola’s brother Pere to broker a move to United.

Much to his surprise, Moyes told him that he was not the kind of player he was looking for.

Thiago then travelled to Munich for talks with Bayern, where Guardiola had just taken over from Jupp Heynckes.

Before agreeing to join Bayern, Thiago tried his luck with United once more, calling them to ask whether their decision was final.

He was rejected once again and decided to move to Bavaria where he has won seven Bundesliga titles.

Now Thiago looks set to leave the Bundesliga giants with just one year remaining on his deal.

According to Bild, United are one of the names in contention.

While Moyes is in charge of relegation-threatened West Ham, he must be feeling daft that he never jumped at the chance to sign Thiago.

Instead, he opted for former favourite Marouane Fellaini, a player who blew hot and cold during his time at the club.

The gulf in class is simply staggering but Thiago is a player who would still have plenty to give if he signed for United.

He would be out to set the record straight and give Solskjaer another world-class option in midfield.

The arrival of Bruno Fernandes has already elevated the team to a new level and helped close the gap on the rest of the top four.

At just £31million, Thiago would not represent great risk particularly when compared with some of the recent transfer fees United have signed off.

United are unlikely to make their move given their new emphasis on signing young, British players.

However, supporters would surely jump at the chance to sign one of the finest midfielders in the game just to show they’re still able to attract the best players around.
