Manchester United hero Dimitar Berbatov has urged Ed Woodward to sign a new centre-half this summer. The Red Devils are ready for a busy transfer window. United’s transfer kitty was boosted after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men finished third in the Premier League to secure Champions League football for next season.
The Red Devils are hoping to bolster their front line, with Woodward and Solskjaer eyeing Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho.
Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish is also a target for United.
However, following United’s defeat in their Europa League semi-final clash against Sevilla, Old Trafford hero Berbatov has urged Solskjaer to bolster his defence.
Berbatov also questioned Solskjaer’s use of midfielder Scott McTominay, who was an unused substitute in the 2-1 defeat on Sunday night.
“The defeat showed that United need to strengthen their squad this summer,” Berbatov told Betfair.
“They need a centre-back for sure. Midfield and up front seems to be OK.
“Paul Pogba looks likely to stay and I would like to see Scott McTominay get back in the team.
“But United need more depth, Ole made his first substitution very late on Sunday night when things weren’t going well.
“It does show he trusts his first eleven a lot, but maybe it shows he doesn’t trust his bench so much.
“There will be lots of games next season, and they need to have the squad to be ready.

“I find McTominay’s situation really strange. He is fit and ready, he got his contract extension, but he doesn’t play.
“Is it because Matic and Fred play really well? I am not sure, but I like him a lot, so hopefully he can pick up the pace next season and get back into the team.”
While Berbatov reckons United need a new centre-back, Old Trafford transfer chiefs are clearly intent on signing Sancho.
However, United and Dortmund are miles apart on their valuation of the England international, 20.
The Red Devils are hoping to pay around £80m for the winger, despite Dortmund demanding £108m.
Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke claimed this week that the German giants don’t need to sell Sancho in a blow to United.
“We have had ten very, very good years at Borussia Dortmund,” he said.
“We made three-digit million profits and wrote deep black numbers. Then corona came and everything changed a little.
“We have succeeded in generating such a high level of liquidity that we can withstand this pandemic for a very long time.”
When asked directly about whether the club needs to sell Sancho, Watzke replied: “We weren’t in a situation where we had to sell at any cost.”
