Man Utd contact Ousmane Dembele’s agent over transfer but hold Jadon Sancho belief

Manchester United view Ousmane Dembele as a cheaper alternative to Jadon Sancho and want to take advantage of Barcelona’s financial woes and convince them to sell the winger, but don’t want to make it public due to their ongoing negotiations with Borussia Dortmund. That’s according to transfer expert Duncan Castles, who revealed on the Transfer Window Podcast that talks have taken place between United and Dembele’s agent.

Dembele has been linked with a move away from Barcelona throughout the window after another poor season in La Liga.

His campaign was rocked by injuries, and he was unable to showcase any of the ability he displayed prior to his move to the Nou Camp.

United have reportedly been monitoring him as an alternative to Sancho, as talks continue to stall with Dortmund.

The Red Devils are desperate to sign a new winger this summer, with a move for the English wonderkid all-but agreed. The only stumbling block remaining is the fee, which United are refusing to pay in one go

And Castles claims United have been in talks with Dembele’s agent, but faced difficulty as his representative demanded a hefty commission fee to make the deal happen.

Barcelona need to sell players this summer before they can make any new signings, and the transfer guru confirmed the move isn’t dead in the water just yet, but that a deal to sign Sancho is more likely.

Castles said: “I’m told there has been contact between United and Dembele’s agent. In that discussion I’m told Dembele’s agent demanded what was described as ‘Mino Raiola money’ to make that deal happen. That’s another factor that makes the deal less likely because this has always been an alternative to Jadon Sancho if they can’t get that deal over the line.

“They want to go after a very highly rated player of similar type to Sancho in terms of speed, creativity and unpredictability.

“United are basically looking for a relatively cheap solution and to take advantage of Barcelona’s financial problems in that sense.

But, they have a player who is reluctant to move, an agent who is saying ‘if you want this deal to happen, it’ll take a lot of money in commission and wages to the player’.

“That’s stalled, to my understanding. The people involved say it’s not impossible that Manchester United come back should Sancho not happen, but it’s become more complicated.

“It also explains why when asked about this, both Barcelona and Manchester United have said there’s no talks between the club.”

He also explained that United don’t want to make their interest in him public because they don’t want to lessen their stance in negotiations with Dortmund for Sancho.

“They don’t want to look like they’re trying to sell Dembele particularly after Koeman has come in and said he is a player he counts on as part of the squad. From Barcelona’s point of view they only want this to become public if they think it’s going to happen,” he continued.

Similarly at Manchester United, they’ve made it clear that Jadon Sancho is their priority, he’s the player they’ve spent a lot of time setting up a deal for in terms of agents fees, structure.

“To be seen to be working on a deal for Dembele is not a good look for Manchester United when they are under severe pressure from supporters.”
