Manchester United are set to break a promise made to Faundo Pellistri’s former side – weeks after signing him.
The Uruguayan teenager was brought in from Penarol on transfer deadline day, with just 37 senior appearances to his name.
It was speculated that the 18-year-old would be part of the first team this season, his only appearance being on the bench against PSG in the Champions League opener.
This was part of the deal, according to Penarol secretary Evaristo Gonzalez who said last month: “Pellistri goes straight to the first team.
"Going to play. In the negotiation they asked me if I could guarantee them if he was in the bubble because they need him.
"Then it will be a matter of the manager if he uses him."
But Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s latest comments suggest that the manager he has already made a U-turn on this decision with the forward.
Speaking ahead of the Champions League clash against Istanbul Basaksehir, he told the club’s website : “He’s a young boy coming over and it’s all new for him.
“He’ll need a few games in the Reserves, of course, to try to find his feet in a new country.
“It’s been very positive so far and he’s someone we’ll be patient with and we’ll give him time to settle in and get used to us. You’ll see him in the Reserves, probably in the next game.”
Pellistri has already made an appearance for the U23 side this season, playing on the right wing in United’s Premier League 2 win over Everton in October.
But the 18-year-old has admitted he already has one eye on the future, identifying a club he would like to play for.
It comes as fellow Uruguayan and former United forward Diego Forlan sent Pellistri a message on his arrival at Old Trafford.
While Pellistri sent his own message to fans on his first day of training at Carrington.
