Manchester United have identified Barcelona flop Ousmane Dembele as a cheaper alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho, according to reports.
Sancho is considered to be United’s top priority target for the next transfer window, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer keen to add quality to his attacking line.
The 20-year-old enjoyed the most prolific season of his career so far, registering 17 goals and 16 assists in just 32 Bundesliga appearances.
However, the German outfit are reluctant to lower their guaranteed price of €100 million (£87m) for the winger and have set an August 10 deadline for any deal to completed.
The financial impact of the coronavirus crisis has still had a considerable effect on United, despite their booming commercial revenue.
According to The Athletic, the Red Devils are looking to limit their net spend in the next transfer window to around £50 million, meaning they would need to sell players to balance the books.
And the report states that United are considering Dembele as a more affordable backup option should a move for Sancho not come to fruition.
The Frenchman has had a torrid time with injuries and poor form over his three-year spell at Camp Nou.
Given Barca’s own financial issues, the 23-year-old may be one of the players they are willing to let go to ease the economic burden.
In terms of the players that United may sell order to raise funds, the report claims that Alexis Sanchez, Chris Smalling, Jesse Lingard, Diogo Dalot, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones could all be let go.
