Man Utd team news: Expected 4-2-3-1 for West Brom clash as Solskjaer rings changes

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be hoping his side can continue where they left off against Everton before the international break, when they welcome struggling West Brom to Old Trafford this evening.

The Red Devils are yet to win a home game in the Premier League this season, so the visit of Slaven Bilic’s West Brom represents the perfect chance for United to get off the mark.

Solskjaer is boosted by the return of several of his key names after they suffered injury scares over the international break, although there remain some long-term absentees.

At the back, Eric Bailly has returned to training but the game will come too soon for the central defender. Captain Harry Maguire should be fine to start, whilst Alex Telles is set for his first league start after recovering from coronavirus.

In midfield, Solskjaer has several options with Fred, Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba all vying for two places.

Bruno Fernandes is almost certain to start, with the Portuguese international vital in United’s 3-1 win over Everton a fortnight ago.

Up front, Solskjaer must decide whether Edinson Cavani is handed his first start in the top flight, or whether to keep faith with Juan Mata.

Anthony Martial is likely to play, whilst Marcus Rashford should be fit if there are no ill-effects from his return to training.

Speaking on Friday ahead of the game, Solskjaer did confirm that three players would not be ready for the game.

“The short version is it’s Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones are the only ones who didn’t join in parts of the training today,” Solskjaer said.

“Some are in different stages after internationals, recoveries and working back after illness and fitness and we’ll make a decision tonight but most of them have joined in today and some yesterday, so it’s looking good.

“Possibles but some of them are probably some doubts.

“Marcus [Rashford] joined for the first time today, hopefully no reaction, [Eric] Bailly first day today so no, him and Marcos Rojo joined for the first time for a month, so they’re not ready.

“Victor [Lindelof], we’ll have to check tomorrow because his back is not great.”

“All the tests from the internationals were negative, which is good,” Solskjaer added.

“Alex Telles travelled [to South America] and wanted to play [for Brazil] but then I think there was a mix-up with the tests – positive/negative and there was loads of talk about if he was going or not, first of all to the first game and then to second game.

“He’s come back and has been training for a few days and is looking good.

“Mason [Greenwood] is fitter,” Solskjaer explained. “He had eight or nine days away from us which is long time. He’s been training hard this week in the gym and on the grass. He’ll be back soon.”

United have won all three of their away games in the league this season, but haven’t picked up three points at Old Trafford yet.

Addressing the difference in their form, Solskjaer said he could not explain why there was such a stark difference in results.

”It’s not as easy as why don’t we win at home why don’t we do so well, every game lives its own life, there are reasons behind that and, as I said, the best game we played at home this season was against RB Leipzig,

“Home and away is not the same, in Norway there are a few hundred fans and they help. Here it’s sterile.

“The Everton game last time out showed a Man United team as we want to see it. We scored some good team goals and I was very pleased with that last performance.”
